About Scarponi Trophy

The Michele Scarponi Trophy is the national road cycling race for the junior category that the Marche region dedicates to the memory of Michele Scarponi, the Eagle of Filottrano, who passed away in 2017. Born in 2025, in 2026 the event doubles, becoming a two-stage race starting from Filottrano, the champion's hometown, and crossing the heart of the Macerata hinterland to Castelraimondo and Camerino. Two days of international youth cycling amidst the Marche hills.

A trophy in the name of Michele Scarponi

The Michele Scarponi Trophy is the road cycling race that the Marche region dedicates to the memory of Michele Scarponi, the "Eagle of Filottrano", winner of the 2011 Giro d'Italia and much loved by the public, who tragically passed away on April 22, 2017, while training near his home. The event, reserved for the junior category (17 and 18-year-old boys), is organized by the Michele Scarponi Foundation ETS together with the ASD Avis Frecce Azzurre of Camerino, with the support of the Marche Region and the Municipalities crossed.

Filottrano, Michele's hometown

The link with Filottrano, in the heart of the Province of Ancona, is the common thread of the entire event: it is here, in the Municipality that was the champion's birthplace, that the first stage begins, on a route that also serves as a tribute to the roads on which Scarponi trained. The race then crosses a large part of central Marche, touching the Municipalities of Cingoli, Jesi, Appignano, Treia, and San Severino Marche, before heading into the Macerata hinterland towards Castelraimondo and Camerino.

A growing race

After its debut in September 2025 with a single stage, in 2026 the Trophy doubles, transforming into an international stage race: 25 teams and over 170 riders will take part, with teams from Italy, Spain, Hungary, Austria, and Slovenia. The race direction is entrusted to Raffaele Babini.

More than just a race

The Trophy is not just a sporting event: it is a moment of collective memory and territorial promotion, which combines the vitality of youth cycling with the enhancement of the Marche's hilly landscapes. For fans, it is also an opportunity to see the emerging talents of European cycling at work, on challenging and selective roads that, even at the junior level, anticipate the climbs and sprints of professional cycling.

Scarponi Trophy โ€” edition 2026

The second edition of the Michele Scarponi Trophy doubles, becoming a two-stage race: Friday, April 3rd, the Filottrano-Castelraimondo, Saturday, April 4th, the Castelraimondo-Camerino. At the start, 25 teams and over 170 junior cyclists from Italy, Spain, Hungary, Austria, and Slovenia, along the hills of central Marche between the Provinces of Ancona and Macerata.

The 2026 edition, the second in the Trophy's history, marked a leap in scale compared to its debut: from a single stage to a true stage race, with dates brought forward to spring. The start of the first stage from Filottrano, Michele Scarponi's hometown, gave symbolic value to the entire event, which attracted teams from all over Europe.

The race crossed the Municipalities of Cingoli, Jesi, Appignano, Treia, and San Severino Marche, before concluding in the Macerata hinterland between Castelraimondo and Camerino. A format designed to offer young athletes a complete course, with sections suitable for attackers and selective climbs.
