The junior cycling race in the name of the Eagle of Filottrano
The Michele Scarponi Trophy is the road cycling race that the Marche region dedicates to the memory of Michele Scarponi, the "Eagle of Filottrano", winner of the 2011 Giro d'Italia and much loved by the public, who tragically passed away on April 22, 2017, while training near his home. The event, reserved for the junior category (17 and 18-year-old boys), is organized by the Michele Scarponi Foundation ETS together with the ASD Avis Frecce Azzurre of Camerino, with the support of the Marche Region and the Municipalities crossed.
The link with Filottrano, in the heart of the Province of Ancona, is the common thread of the entire event: it is here, in the Municipality that was the champion's birthplace, that the first stage begins, on a route that also serves as a tribute to the roads on which Scarponi trained. The race then crosses a large part of central Marche, touching the Municipalities of Cingoli, Jesi, Appignano, Treia, and San Severino Marche, before heading into the Macerata hinterland towards Castelraimondo and Camerino.
After its debut in September 2025 with a single stage, in 2026 the Trophy doubles, transforming into an international stage race: 25 teams and over 170 riders will take part, with teams from Italy, Spain, Hungary, Austria, and Slovenia. The race direction is entrusted to Raffaele Babini.
The Trophy is not just a sporting event: it is a moment of collective memory and territorial promotion, which combines the vitality of youth cycling with the enhancement of the Marche's hilly landscapes. For fans, it is also an opportunity to see the emerging talents of European cycling at work, on challenging and selective roads that, even at the junior level, anticipate the climbs and sprints of professional cycling.
The 2026 edition, the second in the Trophy's history, marked a leap in scale compared to its debut: from a single stage to a true stage race, with dates brought forward to spring. The start of the first stage from Filottrano, Michele Scarponi's hometown, gave symbolic value to the entire event, which attracted teams from all over Europe.
The race crossed the Municipalities of Cingoli, Jesi, Appignano, Treia, and San Severino Marche, before concluding in the Macerata hinterland between Castelraimondo and Camerino. A format designed to offer young athletes a complete course, with sections suitable for attackers and selective climbs.
Early April. The 2026 edition took place on Friday, April 3rd and Saturday, April 4th.
The first stage starts from Filottrano (AN), in via Sant'Anna along the SP 8. The route crosses Cingoli, Jesi, Appignano, Treia, and San Severino Marche, with finishes in Castelraimondo and Camerino (MC).
Filottrano is reachable by car from the Ancona Nord or Loreto exit of the A14, continuing towards the hinterland. The nearest train station is Osimo-Castelfidardo, from which you can continue by car or bus.
The event takes place on roads open to the public: watching the race pass is free.
