Knights, monks, and medieval music at the Abbey of Santo Salvatore
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Medievalia - Soldiers for the King and for Christ is the event that brings the Medievalia, culture of the Middle Ages festival inside the Benedictine Abbey of Santo Salvatore, in the municipality of San Salvatore Telesino, in the province of Benevento (Campania). It is not a costume party or a food festival: it is a cultural outreach event structured as a journey, where the architecture, weapons, art, and music of the Middle Ages are explained and showcased in the very place that gave birth to them.
The format is the one that has made the festival recognizable throughout the historic Terra di Lavoro area: a single afternoon, free admission, and an audience that moves through the spaces of the abbey following the storytellers. Those arriving without historical background will find accessible language; those already familiar with the medieval Sannio region will find precise insights into sources and artifacts.
The title plays on a typically medieval duality: on one hand, the monks, «soldiers of Christ», and on the other, the knights, soldiers of the King. Both have left concrete traces in this abbey, and the narrative focuses on two names:
The presentations revolve around these two figures: the written word of the monk chronicler and the carved stone of the knight become the gateways to the Middle Ages of the Telesina Valley.
The program takes place in the late afternoon and alternates between lectures and demonstrations. Recurring sections include:
The event in San Salvatore Telesino is not an isolated occurrence: it is a stop of Medievalia, culture of the Middle Ages, a project conceived and organized by the cultural associations Ave Gratia Plena of Limatola (Benevento) and Francesco Durante of Caserta. The festival defines itself as a «traveling chair of medieval studies»: every year, free events featuring music, dance, material culture, workshops, conferences, and guided tours traverse the churches, castles, caves, and museums of the Sannio and Terra di Lavoro regions. In 2025, the festival reached its seventeenth edition; in 2026, it is in its eighteenth, with stops in Benevento, Raviscanina, and Capua.
The Santo Salvatore complex dates back to the 9th century and was one of the centers for the spread of Benedictine monasticism in Southern Italy, as well as one of the most important religious hubs in the area during the Middle Ages. Earthquakes, raids, and abandonment have marked its history, but the site preserves traces of the ancient church, remnants of mosaic flooring, fresco fragments, and medieval structures. The area, subject to excavations and a long restoration, is now open to visitors and regularly hosts cultural initiatives.
San Salvatore Telesino is a municipality in the Telesina Valley, a few kilometers from Telese Terme and the ancient Telesia. It is a land of vineyards—we are in the Sannio wine region of Aglianico and Falanghina—and archaeological sites, in an inland Campania that differs from the more well-known coastal image. Participating in Medievalia here means discovering a piece of the Benevento province where medieval heritage is a daily fact rather than a tourist backdrop.
At the time of writing this file, the organizers — the cultural associations Ave Gratia Plena of Limatola and Francesco Durante of Caserta — have not announced a 2026 stop for Medievalia at the Benedictine Abbey of Santo Salvatore in San Salvatore Telesino (province of Benevento, Campania).
The festival, which celebrates its eighteenth edition in 2026, has instead released dates for other locations in the Sannio and the historic Terra di Lavoro. As Medievalia is a traveling project, the presence in San Salvatore Telesino does not automatically repeat every year.
The date indicated in this file is a provisional reference based on the period of the previous edition (late June) and not an official date. No 2026 program is available. It is recommended to check the festival's website and the channels of the Municipality of San Salvatore Telesino for any updates.
Benedictine Abbey of Santo Salvatore, Via Molino Pacelli, 82030 San Salvatore Telesino (BN), Campania.
By car: exit from the SS 372 «Telesina» road, which connects Caianello (A1) to Benevento; from Telese Terme, you can reach San Salvatore Telesino in a few minutes. Parking is available near the abbey area.
By train: Telese Terme-San Salvatore Telesino station on the Naples-Benevento line, then a short trip by car, taxi, or local bus.
By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about an hour and a half away by car.
In previous editions, admission was free, with no mandatory reservation. By statute, the Medievalia festival offers free events.
The events are held in the late afternoon: it is the best time to photograph the abbey. It is advisable to arrive a few minutes before the start, as the guided tour opens the program and seating for the concert is limited. Nearby: Telese Terme and its lake, the archaeological area of Telesia, and the wineries of Sannio (Falanghina and Aglianico) to complete your day.
Updated festival calendar on the Medievalia, culture of the Middle Ages website; the organization is managed by the cultural associations Ave Gratia Plena and Francesco Durante, with logistical support from the Associazione Storica Valle Telesina and the moral patronage of the Municipality of San Salvatore Telesino.
