The village's peasant festival on the banks of the Reno River, in Argelato
May 1st in Malacappa is one of the most genuine folk festivals in the area of Argelato, a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Bologna, in Emilia-Romagna. The event takes place in the hamlet of Malacappa, an ancient settlement nestled along the banks of the Reno River, described by those who know it as 'a small world apart' in the flat Bolognese countryside. For the occasion, the village is closed to traffic and welcomes visitors on foot and by bicycle, restoring the slow and welcoming atmosphere of the past.
The most anticipated and characteristic moment is the traditional tractor parade, a true celebration of the agricultural history of the lower plain. Agricultural vehicles, from vintage models to modern machinery, gather in the square of the Casadio parish church, receive a blessing, and then parade through the streets to Malacappa, greeted by applause from the crowd. It is a ritual that unites the communities of Argelato and Casadio and keeps alive the deep connection of the territory with the land and farm work.
The festival is not just the parade. The program includes village walks, with routes of varying lengths through the riverbanks and countryside, and the classic bike ride, which starts from Funo and reaches Malacappa by cycling along the Reno's ramps. For the little ones, there are puppet shows and entertainment designed for families, making this day an event suitable for all ages.
May 1st in Malacappa is an opportunity to rediscover the conviviality and traditions of the Emilian plain away from large events. Organized by Pro Loco Argelato with the support of the Municipality and local associations, the festival offers an authentic, free, and family-friendly experience, where hospitality and a sense of community remain the protagonists.
