Montefalcione's May 1st celebration featuring allegorical floats, ancient crafts, and Irpinian flavors
Every May 1st, the village of Montefalcione, perched over 500 meters high in the hills of the province of Avellino, in Campania, turns into a grand open-air stage. The May 1st Festival «Flavor, Labor & Tradition» — originally named «Flavor and Tradition» and later expanded to explicitly reference Labor Day — is organized by the Municipality of Montefalcione alongside the Pro Loco «Emilio Ruggiero», involving local associations in a day designed for all ages.
This is more than just a food festival: it is a community celebration that weaves together local identity, the memory of farming and artisan labor, popular entertainment, and conviviality. The result is one of the most popular days in the Irpinian spring calendar, with the town center closed to traffic and the squares returned to pedestrians from morning until late at night.
The spectacular heart of the day is the parade of allegorical floats, created in collaboration with the Gran Carnevale di Baronissi, one of the most established groups in Campania for papier-mâché float construction. The structures, often large and animated by costumed performers, travel through the village streets multiple times, allowing the public to admire them from different angles.
Judging is entrusted to a dual jury: a technical jury and a popular jury, the latter invited to vote via ballots distributed among the spectators. The evening vote count and the awarding of the winning floats, including a special prize, conclude the day late at night, approaching midnight.
In keeping with the May 1st holiday, a place of honor is reserved for the re-enactment of ancient crafts: live demonstrations that showcase the gestures and tools of artisan and farming work from the past. This is the most educational part of the festival, highly appreciated by families and school groups, as it provides a tangible look at how people lived and produced goods in Irpinia before mechanization.
The soundtrack of the day constantly shifts in style. Recent editions have featured the folk group Zompa Cardillo, dedicated to the musical traditions of Campania, concerts by local bands in Piazza Marconi, and the World Music Car Show, a traveling musical event that crosses the village squares, mixing different genres and rhythms.
There is also plenty of space for vintage engines, with the parade of historic Fiat 500s and, in the past, the passage of the Harley Owners Group through the village streets: two events that have become a classic eagerly awaited by visitors.
Throughout the day, food stalls set up in the center remain active, offering typical products and local specialties. Irpinia is a land of great appellation wines — Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo, Taurasi — as well as cheeses, cured meats, fresh pasta, and homemade desserts: the festival is the perfect opportunity to taste them in an authentic setting, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
The day begins as early as 9:30 AM with the inflatable village in Piazza Marconi, enriched by entertainment, games, face painting, and baby dance. This is a deliberate choice by the organizers: to make the festival accessible from the morning for families with young children, who can then stay for the afternoon parade.
With just over three thousand inhabitants, Montefalcione is a small agricultural town in the province of Avellino overlooking the Calore Valley. Its elevated position offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and makes it a convenient base for visiting inland Irpinia, its vineyards, and nearby villages. The May 1st festival is, along with the patronal celebrations, the moment when the community shows its best side: engaged, hospitable, and proud of its roots.
For the 2026 edition, the municipal administration of Montefalcione relaunched the event with a more explicit name, «Flavor, Labor & Tradition», emphasizing the link with Labor Day. The stated goal was to unite all age groups by promoting local culture through shows, parades, and entertainment spread throughout the village.
The day opened at 9:30 AM in Piazza Marconi with the inflatable village dedicated to children, entertainment, and baby dance. In the afternoon, the baton passed to the parade of allegorical floats in Piazza Emilio Ruggiero, set up in collaboration with the Gran Carnevale di Baronissi and with the participation of various local associations; the first lap was at 4:00 PM, with evaluation by the technical and popular juries.
The evening featured the parade of vintage Fiat 500 cars, the second lap of the floats, the counting of popular ballots, and at 9:30 PM, the World Music Car Show, a traveling musical event that enlivened the town squares. At 11:00 PM, the awards ceremony for the winning floats and the presentation of a special prize concluded the event. Throughout the event, food stalls with local specialties remained active.
Food stalls with typical products and traditional Montefalcione cuisine specialties are active throughout the day.
By car: From the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Avellino Est exit, then the SS7 towards Benevento/Montemiletto and provincial roads towards Montefalcione (about 20 km from Avellino). By train: Avellino station, then local bus. By plane: Naples Capodichino Airport, about 70 km away.
During the event, the historic center is subject to traffic closures for the passage of the allegorical floats: it is advisable to arrive early and leave your car in the parking areas on the outskirts of the village, continuing on foot.
Admission is free to all initiatives. Only food and drinks at the stalls and attractions for children managed by private operators require payment.
In Montefalcione, accommodation is limited to a few B&Bs and farmhouses: for a more comfortable stay, you can choose Avellino, Atripalda, or nearby wine-growing villages like Montemiletto, Lapio, and Taurasi, all within a half-hour drive.
