Mathematics becomes a game in Pioltello
In Pioltello, a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Milan in the Martesana area, mathematics leaves the classrooms and takes to the streets with Matematica in Festa, an outreach event that aims to debunk the idea of the subject as something difficult. The goal is clear: to show how surprising, creative, and even fun numbers can be.
The event is divided into two parts. The first is an evening conference in the Library, dedicated to the relationship between different world cultures and numbers. The second is the heart of the event: the widespread festival in Piazza dei Popoli, where game stands, riddles, and mathematical challenges liven up the afternoon, culminating in a street show that combines numbers, juggling, and magic.
A significant aspect of Matematica in Festa is the involvement of students from the Machiavelli High School, who run the stands and guide visitors through the games, some of which they designed themselves. It's a way to put young people at the center of scientific outreach and to introduce children and families to STEM disciplines in a participatory way.
Organized by the Municipality of Pioltello together with the PiGreco association and the Municipal Library, Matematica in Festa is a free event that confirms the city's commitment to accessible scientific culture. An event that, between the square and the library, transforms numbers into a shared language and an occasion for celebration.
The 2026 edition of Matematica in Festa is spread between May 7 and 9. On Thursday, May 7, at the Library, the conference "Numbers without Borders" with science communicator Giulia Bernardi; on Saturday, May 9, in Piazza dei Popoli, the widespread festival with game stands, riddles, and the street show "Gran varietà matematico" by Marco Testa. A program organized by the Municipality with the PiGreco association and students from the Machiavelli High School.
Pioltello (MI) is located in the Martesana area, east of Milan. It is served by the Pioltello-Limito station on the Milan-Treviglio line. Piazza dei Popoli and the Municipal Library are the venues for the event.
The event takes place in May: an evening conference in the Library and the widespread festival in Piazza dei Popoli in the afternoon.
