Three centuries of maritime devotion and sea processions in the Gulf of Policastro
In Villammare, a seaside hamlet of the municipality of Vibonati in the province of Salerno (Campania), devotion to Maria Santissima di Portosalvo has been documented since 1726. According to diocesan and parish archives, this was when a group of local fishermen began honoring the Virgin under this title. Since then, the Madonna has been the town's patron saint and protector of seafarers, invoked as a safe harbor by those who live by fishing and navigation. In 2026, the community celebrated the tercentenary of the cult's inception.
The festival has a unique structure that sets it apart from other patronal feasts in the Cilento region and the Gulf of Policastro: it is celebrated twice a year. The June recurrence is the oldest, dating back to the 18th-century origins of the cult; the second Sunday of August is the most well-known and widely attended, as it coincides with the peak of the summer season, drawing emigrants, vacationers, and visitors from across the gulf. Both dates are preceded by a period of spiritual preparation, a novena or triduum, with evening celebrations in the sanctuary.
The heart of the festival is the sea procession. The effigy of the Madonna leaves the church accompanied by the so-called «Asciuta», a spectacular daytime pyrotechnic display on the beach, and is then embarked for a journey along the coast. A parade of traditional fishing boats follows the statue as a blessing is bestowed upon the gulf, the boats, and the fishermen from the sea. By tradition, the winning boat of the «Villammare in Voga» regatta has the honor of leading the procession. Upon returning in the afternoon, the procession continues through the streets of the seaside village with ritual stops, concluding in front of the sea, where the faithful sing the hymn dedicated to the «Madonnina del Mare».
On June 7, 2026, the festival reached a historic milestone: by decree of Bishop Antonio De Luca, the church of Maria Santissima di Portosalvo was elevated to a Diocesan Sanctuary, the only site in the Diocese of Teggiano-Policastro linked to this Marian devotion. The commemorative plaque was blessed by Monsignor Alfonso Raimo at the end of the solemn mass. The parish priest, Father Vincenzo Contaldi, noted that this recognition rewards both the documented continuity of the festival since 1726 and the church's current role as a center of Marian spirituality for seafarers.
Alongside the religious events, a civic festival is organized by the «Stella Maris» Festival Committee in collaboration with the parish. The typical program includes:
Villammare is the coastal fraction of Vibonati, a hillside village overlooking the Gulf of Policastro at the southern tip of the province of Salerno and the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The beach, the small harbor, and the promenade provide a natural backdrop for the festival. Participating means witnessing the town live its daily relationship with the sea, amidst nets, boats, and a devotion that unites generations. During the festival, the village comes alive with the typical hospitality of the Cilento, characterized by seafood cuisine, simple warmth, and a slow pace of life.
2026 marked three hundred years since the beginning of the devotion to Maria Santissima di Portosalvo, attested in Villammare since June 1726. For the occasion, the Bishop of Teggiano-Policastro, Monsignor Antonio De Luca, issued the decree elevating the seaside village's church to a Diocesan Sanctuary: a recognition that consecrates the site's role as a center of Marian spirituality for the seafarers of the Gulf of Policastro.
Following the preparatory novena, the solemnity was celebrated on Sunday, June 7, with a 10:00 AM mass, at the end of which Monsignor Alfonso Raimo, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, blessed the commemorative plaque for the elevation to sanctuary. The day continued with the traditional fair in the town streets, the afternoon procession of the effigy with a blessing directed toward the sea, the evening Eucharistic celebration in the square, and, in closing, music and a pyrotechnic display on the seafront. Alongside the parish priest, Father Vincenzo Contaldi, priests linked to the community concelebrated.
As every year, the community of Villammare also renews the festival on the second Sunday of August, the most well-known and attended recurrence, with a preparatory triduum, sea procession, and musical fireworks over the gulf. The detailed program is released by the parish and the Festival Committee in the preceding days.
