The sea festival in Trieste between science, sport, and culture
Mare Nordest is the event that celebrates the deep bond between Trieste and the sea, an identity element of the Julian city. Created to promote sea culture in all its forms, the festival intertwines science, sport, environment, and outreach in a rich and popular program that has its heart in the majestic Piazza Unità d'Italia, directly overlooking the Adriatic.
Among the most prestigious events of the festival is the awarding of the Golden Tridents, considered the "Nobel Prize of diving": an international recognition that rewards the most important achievements and personalities in the world of diving and sea exploration. A moment of great prestige that brings the world's diving protagonists to Trieste.
The program alternates sports competitions and challenges — such as the Traversata delle Tre Nazioni, a scenic open-water swimming event connecting Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy — with workshops, scientific meetings, and educational activities dedicated to marine monitoring, sustainability, and research. An opportunity for students and the curious to approach marine science in an engaging way.
Organized with the support of the Municipality of Trieste and the Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, Mare Nordest is a great popular and cultural celebration that attracts enthusiasts, families, and tourists. Experiencing the festival means discovering Trieste from its most authentic point of view: that of the sea that embraces it and tells its story.
The 15th edition of Mare Nordest enlivens Trieste from May 28 to 31, 2026, with the theme "@mareinvolo", dedicated to seaplanes and the centenary of the first commercial flight from Trieste. Between Piazza Unità d'Italia, Molo Audace, and Scala Reale, the festival offers an international seaplane gathering, the awarding of the Golden Tridents, the Three Nations Crossing, and numerous educational activities dedicated to the sea and its protection.
The complete program will be published by the organizers in the weeks prior.
