About Magnareccia sulla Carrareccia

Magnareccia sulla Carrareccia is the signature archeo-trekking event in Fabrica di Roma, located in the Viterbo Tuscia region. It is a day that blends hiking, history, and local gastronomy along the ancient Via Amerina. The experience begins with breakfast and a visit to the Abbey of Santa Maria in Falleri, followed by a trek from Falerii Novi to the Necropolis of Cavo degli Zucchi, passing through ancient Faliscan rock-cut tombs. The journey features historical re-enactments along the trail and concludes with a lunch of local products accompanied by live music.

A journey through the history of the Agro Falisco

Magnareccia sulla Carrareccia is an event that transforms the countryside of Fabrica di Roma, in the province of Viterbo, into an open-air trail of archaeology, nature, and fine food. Originally launched as an archeo-trekking initiative titled "Walking through History," the day guides participants along the Via Amerina, an ancient Roman road with its original stone paving still intact, deep in the heart of the Faliscan Tuscia. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Fabrica di Roma to showcase one of the most significant archaeological heritages in the Lazio region.

Falerii Novi, the Falisci, and the Via Amerina

The landscape tells the story of the ancient Falisci people and the Roman city of Falerii Novi, founded in 241 BC following the destruction of the nearby Falerii Veteres. From here begins the Via Amerina, which once connected Rome to Umbria, lined with dozens of rock-cut tombs carved into the tuff. The trail leads to the Necropolis of Cavo degli Zucchi, the largest Faliscan burial site, featuring approximately two hundred tombs of various types, including chambers, loculi, and niches.

The Abbey of Santa Maria in Falleri

The starting point is the Abbey of Santa Maria in Falleri, a 12th-century Cistercian jewel located within the walls of Falerii Novi. A guided tour introduces the history of the monastic complex and the fascination of the famous "Dove of Light," an optical phenomenon that, during equinoxes and solstices, projects the luminous figure of a dove onto the apse.

Trekking, re-enactment, and conviviality

The route is easy and family-friendly, winding through woods, nature trails, and archaeological remains. Along the way, a historical re-enactment brings a slice of ancient Faliscan life to the stage. The event concludes with the culinary highlight that gives the festival its name: a lunch featuring local products, including food and drinks from the Fabrica area, accompanied by musical entertainment.

An event for the whole community

Magnareccia sulla Carrareccia has become a highly anticipated date in the Tuscia calendar. The format combines slow-paced landscape discovery with social gathering, fostering a strong sense of identity between the community of Fabrica di Roma and its Faliscan and Roman roots. It is an authentic way to experience the Agro Falisco on foot, discovering the lesser-known and most fascinating side of the Lazio region.
