An evening of yesteryear among the carts of the ancient tin workers
In Cantù, a town in Brianza in the province of Como, the Magnan Evening — also known as the "evening of yesteryear" — celebrates a figure now disappeared from daily life: the magnano, the travelling tin worker who went from town to town repairing pots, cauldrons, and copper and tin utensils. A humble and itinerant trade, part of the agricultural and artisan memory of the area, which this carnival evening restores to the community.
The event was born in 2011 as part of the Cantù Carnival, of which it is one of the most cherished appointments. In Piazza Garibaldi, the floats of the participating groups parade, accompanied by music and entertainment, in an atmosphere that blends the carnival celebration with the re-enactment of the past. The evening lasts until late at night, transforming the central square into a stage of lights, sounds, and tradition.
The Magnan Evening is much more than a simple carnival event: it is an act of collective memory, the way Cantù chooses not to forget the trades and characters that animated its past. Included in the calendar of the Cantù Carnival, it contributes to making this carnival one of the richest and most distinctive in Brianza, capable of intertwining fun, folklore, and popular roots.
The 13th edition of the Magnan Evening of Cantù takes place on Friday, February 20, 2026, in Piazza Garibaldi, from 8:30 PM until 1:00 AM. Eight floats participate in the re-enactment of the ancient trade of tin workers, in one of the most characteristic evenings of the Cantù Carnival.
The event, born in 2011, confirms its link with local popular tradition, transforming Cantù's central square into a stage of music, lights, and memory.
