The night of July 15th at Piazza del Carmine, featuring Neapolitan songs and the ritual of the Burning of the Bell Tower
The Madonna del Carmine Festival, known to everyone simply as «'a festa d''o Carmene», is one of the most heartfelt events in the popular calendar of the capital of Campania. It takes place in the historic heart of the City of Naples, in the area historically known as the «Mercato district» and now administratively part of the Pendino district, around Piazza del Carmine and the Basilica Santuario di Santa Maria del Carmine Maggiore. The most anticipated moment is the evening of July 15th, the eve of the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, which is celebrated on the 16th.
The heart of the festival is the famous Burning of the Bell Tower, a pyrotechnic re-enactment that has no equal in Italy. The basilica's bell tower—a 17th-century work by Fra' Nuvolo, standing about 75 meters tall and among the highest in the city—is covered in fireworks, colored smoke, and lighting effects that simulate a real fire. At the climax of the show, the flames are symbolically «extinguished» by the arrival of the image of the Madonna Bruna: a theatrical gesture that, in the popular imagination, represents the Virgin's protection over the city.
The roots of the ritual date back to the 16th century. Tradition links the festival to the capture of La Goletta and Tunis by Charles V in 1535, commemorated in Piazza Mercato with a wooden fortress that was assaulted and set on fire during popular celebrations. The «Alarbi», young men from the neighborhood, participated in that staging by simulating the defense of the fort: it was from that very pageant, in July 1647, that the revolt led by Masaniello began; he died on July 16th of that same year, the day of the Madonna del Carmine. During the Bourbon era, the sovereigns donated the gunpowder for the fireworks in honor of the Madonna Bruna every year, consolidating a custom that has never been interrupted.
For some years now, the ritual has been preceded by a large free concert held in Piazza del Carmine, dedicated to the repertoire of Neapolitan song reinterpreted in a contemporary key. The formula unites the public of devotees with that of curious onlookers and tourists, transforming the eve into a true popular festival that concludes with the roar of fireworks on the bell tower.
The Carmine Festival is now part of the official calendar of Patronal Feasts promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities of the City of Naples, a project created to enhance the city's intangible heritage—which boasts more patron saints than any other Italian city. The organization in the square is handled by the Forum Mercato Orefici, in collaboration with the Carmelite community of the sanctuary.
Witnessing the Burning of the Bell Tower means seeing Naples in its most authentic form: sacred and profane coexisting without embarrassment, a crowded square singing together and then holding its breath in front of the flaming tower. It is one of those events that tells the story of the city better than any guidebook, and which has been passed down unchanged for nearly five centuries.
The 2026 Madonna del Carmine Festival focused, as per tradition, on the evening of Wednesday, July 15, in Piazza del Carmine, Naples. The event was included in the official «Beato chi le vive» calendar, the fourth edition of the Patronal Feasts promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities of the City of Naples, which in 2026 featured twenty-six patronal celebrations from June 1st to October 17th.
The «That's Napoli Live Show» took place in the square, a performance conceived and directed by Maestro Carlo Morelli: a choir that reinterpreted the great classics of Neapolitan song with pop and rock arrangements, for a narrative that bridges roots and modernity. At the end of the concert came the most anticipated moment, the Burning of the Bell Tower ritual: the 75-meter tower designed by Fra' Nuvolo was enveloped in fireworks, colored smoke, and light effects, with the symbolic flames extinguished by the arrival of the image of the Madonna Bruna.
Celebrations in the Basilica Santuario del Carmine Maggiore accompanied the days leading up to the solemnity, culminating on Thursday, July 16, with the solemn mass in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. The organization of the events in the square was handled by the Forum Mercato Orefici.
In 2026, admission was completely free and the square filled up well before the start: a mixed audience of devotees, families from the Pendino district, and visitors arrived to witness one of the most spectacular rituals in Campania.
In the days preceding the festival, the sanctuary hosted the usual cycle of celebrations and moments of prayer dedicated to the Madonna Bruna.
