About Madonna degli Angeli and San Magno Festival

Every year in the second half of August, the Madonna degli Angeli district in Fondi celebrates its patronal feast in honor of the Virgin Mary and Saint Magnus, a bishop and martyr venerated throughout the Pontine Plain. The event features liturgical celebrations, cultural activities, evening shows, and a solemn procession with the two statues through the neighborhood streets, organized by the Santa Maria degli Angeli e San Magno Parish with the active involvement of the entire community.

A neighborhood festival in the heart of the Fondi plain

The Madonna degli Angeli and San Magno Festival is the patronal feast of the parish of the same name in Fondi, a city in the province of Latina, in southern Lazio. It traditionally takes place in the second half of August and involves the entire Madonna degli Angeli district along Via Ponte Gagliardo, where the parish community sets up a multi-day program that weaves together liturgy, culture, and social gatherings.

San Magno, patron of the Fondi land

San Magno (Saint Magnus), bishop and martyr, is one of the most deeply rooted devotional figures in the Fondi area. The ancient Monastery of San Magno, located at the foot of the Ausoni Mountains, is dedicated to him—a place of silence and pilgrimage that has drawn the faithful of the plain for centuries. The local parish preserves his cult alongside that of the Madonna degli Angeli, uniting two devotions in a single festival that perfectly captures the religious and popular identity of the Municipality of Fondi.

The heart of the festival: the procession

The most anticipated moment is the concluding procession, which takes place on the final evening, winding through the neighborhood streets with the statues of the Madonna and San Magno, accompanied by local brass bands. It is a simple and heartfelt ritual: families gather at their doorsteps, balconies are decorated, and the procession continues until it returns to the church, where the festivities continue with an evening show and the drawing of the traditional prize raffle.

Typical program

  • Daily liturgical celebrations: novenas, Holy Masses, confessions, and prayer sessions that mark the days of the festival;
  • Cultural evenings: amateur theatrical performances, pop music concerts, and tributes to the greats of Italian song;
  • Extraordinary events: recent editions have included the solemn reception of relics and historical pageants in period costumes organized by local historical associations;
  • Social gatherings: food stalls and tastings in the sports field area, featuring the flavors of local Fondi cuisine;
  • Final comedy show and closing with the prize raffle drawing.

Fondi, between sea, mountains, and tradition

Fondi is one of the most interesting cities in the province of Latina. Its historic center preserves the Baronial Castle and the Giudea district, while just a few kilometers away lie the Lake of Fondi, the Sant'Anastasia coastline, and the heights of the Ausoni Mountains. The city is also famous for its agricultural vocation and the MOF, one of the largest fruit and vegetable markets in Europe. Here, the quality of the land and popular devotion coexist naturally, and the neighborhood festivals in August are their most vivid testament.

Why attend

Those who arrive in Fondi in August will find an authentic festival, not one staged for tourism. It is easy to connect with the locals, witness a deeply felt procession, and discover a religious tradition that remains a powerful social glue in southern Lazio. It is an ideal opportunity to combine a festive evening with the discovery of the historic center and the Pontine coast.
