About Ludika 1243

Every summer, the medieval San Pellegrino district in the heart of Viterbo travels back to the 13th century. Ludika 1243 playfully re-enacts the 1243 siege by Frederick II, culminating in the famous pitched Battle between Guelphs and Ghibellines at Valle Faul. Four days of street theatre, jesters, fire-eaters, a medieval market, sword tournaments, archery, live-action role-playing, and early music, all with free admission, organized by the APS La Tana degli Orchi since 2000.

The Middle Ages in play in the heart of Viterbo

Ludika 1243 is the grand playful re-enactment that brings Viterbo back to the 13th century every summer. For four days, the San Pellegrino district, one of the best-preserved medieval villages in Europe, transforms into a 13th-century town populated by jesters, jugglers, stilt-walkers, fire-eaters, archers, men-at-arms, and merchants. Created in 2000 by Serenella Bovi and Claudio Bartolucci, the event is organized by the APS La Tana degli Orchi with the patronage of the Municipality of Viterbo, the Province of Viterbo, and the Lazio Region, and has become one of the most anticipated events of the Tuscia summer.

1243: The siege of Frederick II

The festival's name recalls a key episode in the city's history: in 1243, Viterbo, aligned with the papacy, rebelled against Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, who laid siege to the city without succeeding in capturing it. Ludika 1243 celebrates that page of history with a playful spirit: the most anticipated moment is the pitched Battle, introduced in the second edition, where hundreds of participants of all ages, divided into Guelphs and Ghibellines, challenge each other at Valle Faul with the goal of capturing the opposing banner. The battle is open to everyone, including children, and the staff provides period costumes to those who sign up at the information stand.

A festival of street art, theatre, and music

The re-enactment is surrounded by a true street arts festival: theatre and commedia dell'arte performances in the cloisters and squares of the district, travelling productions like the «Divina Commedia dell'Arte», early music and medieval folk concerts, fire shows, and evening jesters' performances. Along Via San Pellegrino, the medieval market and ancient craft stalls unfold, while Piazza San Pellegrino and Piazza del Gesù host artists and troupes until late at night.

Playing history: arenas, tournaments, and role-playing games

The playful vocation is in the festival's DNA: the sword arena with training for the battle, archery and archery tag, medieval dance workshops, wooden street games, and the Tournament of Champions with combat demonstrations. Role-playing enthusiasts will find live dungeons and live-action role-playing games at the Giardino del Paradosso, while Palazzo degli Alessandri hosts the game library of La Tana degli Orchi and Giokeria, the festival dedicated to board and card games that runs alongside Ludika.

A participatory festival

Ludika 1243 is designed to be experienced as a protagonist: in addition to the battle open to the public, the festival features the «Maman Louise» contest for the best self-made medieval or fantasy costume, the «Cogli l'attimo» photo contest, and, a new feature for 2026, the «Boberone d'oro» for the best original game. Admission to all activities is free.

Viterbo, City of the Popes

The festival is also an opportunity to discover Viterbo, the City of the Popes, capital of the province of the same name in northern Lazio: the San Pellegrino district, with its profferlo houses, towers, and peperino stone alleys, offers the re-enactment an authentic backdrop that needs no staging. A dive into the Middle Ages just over an hour from Rome, in the heart of the Tuscia region.

Ludika 1243 — edition 2026

The 26th edition of Ludika 1243 brought the San Pellegrino district of Viterbo to life from July 2 to 5, 2026: four days of street theatre and commedia dell'arte, a medieval market, a sword arena, archery, live-action role-playing, and the sixth edition of Giokeria at Palazzo degli Alessandri, culminating in the great pitched Battle on Sunday, July 5, at Valle Faul, a re-enactment of the 1243 siege by Frederick II.

Ludika 1243 — 26th edition

From July 2 to 5, 2026, the medieval San Pellegrino district returned to being a 13th-century town for the 26th edition of Ludika 1243, organized by the APS La Tana degli Orchi with the patronage of the Municipality of Viterbo, the Province of Viterbo, and the Lazio Region. The programme intertwined performance and play: the travelling show «Divina Commedia dell'Arte — Inferno», the «Maman Louise» contest for the best self-made costume, the Tournament of Champions, and the live dungeons of Battle For Vilegis at the Giardino del Paradosso.

Grand finale on Sunday, July 5: at 6 PM, the historical pageant departed from Piazza San Carluccio towards Valle Faul, where Guelphs and Ghibellines faced off in the traditional pitched Battle, open to adults and children with costumes provided by the staff. A new feature this year was the «Boberone d'oro» award for the best original game. Free admission to all activities.
