The major international literary competition at the Norman-Swabian Castle of Sannicandro di Bari
The Lucius Annaeus Seneca International Academic Prize for Contemporary Literature is a literary competition that brings the town of Sannicandro di Bari, in the province of Bari, to life every year in the heart of Puglia. Promoted by the Academy of Arts and Philosophical Sciences of Bari, the prize is dedicated to the Latin philosopher and playwright Lucius Annaeus Seneca and has established itself as one of the most authoritative cultural events in the southern literary scene, drawing authors from dozens of countries worldwide.
The call for entries is divided into numerous sections ranging from unpublished poetry to fiction (short stories), and from journalistic articles to published books of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. There are also categories reserved for university and high school students, as well as sections dedicated to authors residing abroad. Alongside the main awards, numerous special prizes are assigned on highly topical themes, including violence against women, history, contemporary philosophical thought, family bonds, love, childhood, and conflict.
Each winner receives a personalized trophy and an academic parchment signed by the President of the Prize and the President of the Commission, accompanied by a critical review. The Seneca Prize boasts high-level patronage and, over the years, has been awarded the Medal of the Chamber of Deputies and the Medal of the Senate of the Republic, a testament to the prestige the event has achieved.
The awards ceremony is held in the Stables Hall of the Norman-Swabian Castle of Sannicandro di Bari, one of the most iconic monuments of this Apulian village. The historical setting of the manor lends solemnity to the event and transforms the town into a capital of literature for a day, with the participation of authorities, university professors, journalists, and figures from the world of culture.
Beyond the competition, the Seneca Prize represents a meeting point for writers, poets, and enthusiasts, with the constant presence of the Municipal Administration of Sannicandro di Bari. The event helps promote reading, writing, and the enhancement of the historical and cultural heritage of the Bari province and the entire Puglia region.
The Seneca Prize returns to Sannicandro di Bari with a new edition that will conclude on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the Stables Hall of the Norman-Swabian Castle. The call for entries, promoted by the Academy of Arts and Philosophical Sciences of Bari, has set May 31, 2026, as the deadline for submitting works, confirming the sections dedicated to unpublished poetry and fiction, journalistic articles, and published books, with categories reserved for students and authors residing abroad.
At the moment, the list of winners and the detailed program of the ceremony have not yet been made public: the Commission's report with the rankings and special prizes is released on the Academy's website in the months preceding the award ceremony.
The awards ceremony is held in the Stables Hall of the Norman-Swabian Castle of Sannicandro di Bari (BA), in Puglia. The village is easily reached by car from Bari (about 16 km) via the SS96 or provincial roads; the Bari Centrale train station is connected to the town by local transport services.
The call for entries requires an entry fee (20 euros per section, 10 euros for each additional section, with free entry for young people and authors residing abroad who compete in the poetry section). Works should be sent via email to [email protected] along with the completed registration form.
