The free sunset concert of the Locomotive Jazz Festival in the heart of the Salento region
Every summer, the Locomotive Jazz Festival chooses Leverano, a town in the Salento hinterland near Lecce, as a key stop for its Locomotive Sunsets: the free concerts at dusk that have become the festival's hallmark. Conceived and directed by Salento-born saxophonist Raffaele Casarano, the festival transforms Puglia's villages into open-air stages each year, and Leverano is a proud part of this musical journey through the province of Lecce.
The Leverano stop follows the formula that made the Locomotive famous: a concert immersed in the atmosphere of the sunset, preceded by a guided walking tour to discover the historic center. In the late afternoon, the audience gathers to explore the town with a guide, visiting the Clock Tower and the local architecture before reaching the concert venue. It is a perfect way to combine high-quality music with an appreciation for the local heritage and traditions.
The Leverano stop is part of a broader program that, over several weeks between July and August, touches various towns in Salento with free sunset concerts, culminating in the festival's signature event: the Locomotive Sunrise, a grand concert held at dawn on the beach of Marina di San Cataldo, near Lecce. Leverano shares the festival's spirit—centered on jazz, songwriting, and local pride—with the other host towns, thanks to the collaboration of the Municipality of Leverano and local associations.
Attending a Locomotive Sunset in Leverano means enjoying a free evening of great music in one of Salento's most authentic villages, bathed in the warm light of the sunset and surrounded by a historic center rich in stories. It is an event perfectly suited for both jazz enthusiasts and those looking for a unique cultural experience in the heart of Puglia, a land that guards the true soul of the Lecce province among vineyards, olive groves, and ancient towers.
As part of the 21st edition of the Locomotive Jazz Festival (July 18 - August 4, 2026), Leverano hosts one of the seven Locomotive Sunsets, the free sunset concerts of the festival directed by Raffaele Casarano.
The star of the Leverano evening is the Marina Rei Trio, performing as part of the 2026 live tour of the Roman singer-songwriter at the Nuova Area Mercatale. Before the concert, at 6:15 PM, the public will gather on Via Vittorio Veneto for a guided walking tour of the historic center led by Dr. Valentino Traversa, exploring the Clock Tower and the village's architecture in the province of Lecce.
Free admission. Information: +39 329 9275643.
Leverano is located in Salento, in the province of Lecce. It can be reached by car from Lecce (about 25 km) and Nardò, or by train via the Ferrovie del Sud Est line, which has a stop in Leverano. The sunset concerts are held in various locations within the historic center and municipal areas, such as the Nuova Area Mercatale.
The Locomotive Sunset concerts are free to attend. The guided walking tour that precedes the concert is also free. For information on schedules, you can call +39 329 9275643.
We recommend arriving early to participate in the guided tour of the village and to secure a good spot. Comfortable and light clothing is recommended for the warm Salento summer evenings.
