A Palm Sunday that stops time

Every year, on Palm Sunday, the Municipality of Supino, in the province of Frosinone, opens Holy Week with one of the most intense religious events in southern Lazio: the Living Passion. The sacred representation takes place in the Ciccamagna area, a rural district on the outskirts of the town that for one day transforms into a Jerusalem of two thousand years ago, populated by Roman soldiers, Temple priests, and commoners in tunics. It is an event of great intensity and emotion, capable of attracting a large audience every year from Ciociaria and the entire Lazio region.

From the Sanhedrin to Calvary: the representation

The heart of the Living Passion of Supino is the story of the final hours of Jesus, with a particular focus on the stages of the trial: the appearance before the Sanhedrin, the interrogation by Pilate, the passage before Herod, and the final judgment by the Roman procurator, in a process that the organizers themselves compare to the levels of judgment in contemporary justice. The narrative then continues with the climb to Calvary and culminates in the scene of the crucifixion, a moment of profound collective emotion. The stated intent of the event is to make spectators relive the emotions, anxieties, and psycho-physical state of the condemned Christ, in a dimension that is more spiritual than theatrical.

Almost half a century of tradition

With the 48th edition celebrated in 2026, the Living Passion of Supino has roots dating back to the late 1970s. In nearly fifty years, the representation has become one of the town's most defining collective rituals: entire generations of Supino residents have moved from roles as extras to protagonists, passing down costumes, gestures, and lines. Today, the event is considered one of the longest-running Passion reenactments in the province of Frosinone.

Over 150 extras: a community on stage

The organizational machine involves over 150 extras and actors, all volunteers. Preparation begins well in advance: for the 2026 edition, the rehearsal schedule was announced as early as January on the event's social media channels, with regular meetings to refine acting, processions, and stage sets. This choral work, which unites the parish, associations, and families, is what gives the representation its authentic and popular character.

Ciccamagna, a natural theater

The choice of the Ciccamagna area is not accidental: the rural landscape at the foot of the Lepini Mountains, with its slopes and open spaces, offers a natural setting that recalls the biblical Judea and allows for the various scenes of the Passion to be staged along an outdoor path, followed step by step by the spectators.

Supino and Ciociaria

Supino is a village of ancient origins nestled on the slopes of the Lepini Mountains, a few kilometers from Ferentino and the A1 motorway exit. As in many towns in Ciociaria, popular religiosity marks the calendar of festivals here: the Living Passion on Palm Sunday is, along with the patronal celebrations, one of the moments when the community recognizes itself and comes together.
