The Nativity comes alive in the alleys of the Sibillini village
Among the most cherished Christmas events in the Macerata hinterland, the Living Nativity through the Streets of the Village in Monte San Martino transforms the entire historic center into a life-size representation of the Nativity. It is not a static display: costumed figures come to life among alleys, arches, and small squares, recreating evocative scenes that bring back the enchantment of a bygone era. The route is a walking tour that winds through the most characteristic points of the village, accompanying the visitor from the daily life of the ancient village to the stable with the Holy Family.
Monte San Martino is a small municipality in the Province of Macerata, in the Marche region, situated on a hill overlooking the upper Tenna Valley with a view towards the Sibillini Mountains. Its historic center, made up of narrow alleys, staircases, and panoramic views, is the ideal setting for a living nativity scene: the stones, ancient doorways, and small squares become the natural backdrop for the re-enactment. The village also preserves a significant artistic heritage, from the polyptychs by Carlo and Vittore Crivelli in the Church of San Martino to the Civic Art Gallery "Mons. Armindo Ricci," which make an evening stroll through its walls even more special.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Monte San Martino and involves a large part of the community: families, volunteers, and villagers dress up as characters from the nativity scene, from shepherds to artisans, recreating ancient crafts and the rural life of the past. It is precisely this choral participation that gives the event its authentic character, far from more spectacular performances but close to the intimate and familiar spirit of village festivals.
The living nativity scene is held during the Christmas period, particularly around Epiphany. For the 2026 edition, the event is scheduled for Sunday, January 4, 2026, starting at 5:00 PM, when the evening lights and the fires lit along the route enhance the atmosphere of the re-enactment. The event is part of the rich calendar of living nativity scenes that animate the villages of the Marche between Christmas and Epiphany.
