The Nativity comes alive in the streets of the village
The Living Nativity of Montefano is one of the most beloved Christmas reenactments in the Macerata area. On the days between New Year's and Epiphany, the Municipality of Montefano, a small village in the Marche Region overlooking the rolling hills between Recanati and Macerata, opens its streets and the spaces of Parco Veregra to a choral representation of the Nativity that involves the entire community.
Along the route, dozens of costumed figures recreate the village of Bethlehem and the Palestine of Jesus' time. Amidst corners of the historic center and settings prepared for the occasion, visitors will encounter:
The event takes place over several days between January 1st, 4th, and 6th, generally starting from 4:00 PM, when the late afternoon light and torches make the journey even more evocative. The scenes unfold through the historic center of Montefano and the Parco Veregra, the green heart of the town.
More than just a show, the Living Nativity of Montefano is a participatory project that mobilizes volunteers, families, and associations from the village every year. The care taken with costumes, the staging of scenes, and the animation of the environments make this reenactment a strong identity moment for the citizens and an opportunity to rediscover the popular traditions and folklore of the province of Macerata. Admission is free and the event is suitable for the whole family.
Visiting the living nativity scene is also an opportunity to discover Montefano, a Marche village with a compact historic center, and its inland cultivated hills, a short distance from famous destinations like Recanati, the homeland of Giacomo Leopardi, and the provincial capital Macerata. A journey that combines spirituality, tradition, and the Marche landscape during the most magical period of the year.
