The medieval village of Tuscia relives the Nativity
During the holiday season, the town of Bassano in Teverina, a small village perched in the province of Viterbo, in the Lazio Tuscia, transforms into a large open-air living nativity scene. The cobbled streets, cellars carved into the tuff rock, and the glimpses of the medieval historic center provide a natural backdrop for one of the most attended representations in Upper Tuscia, described by local press as the largest living nativity in the Viterbo area.
The re-enactment is set entirely in the 1200s: over 160 performers in period costumes bring the crafts and daily activities of the past to life. Along the route, you will encounter artisans at work, women spinning wool, the blacksmith, the shepherd, the innkeeper, the shoemaker, and the so-called Mastri nel Tempo (Masters of Time), in a choral fresco that weaves together history, faith, and popular traditions.
The new itinerary winds through nineteen caves set up within the village. One of them is entirely dedicated to the Nativity, the spiritual heart of the event, where the birth of Jesus is depicted in an intimate and evocative setting. The figure of Saint Francis ideally accompanies visitors along the path, leading to the central scene of the sacred representation.
The route is punctuated by gastronomic stops where you can taste traditional peasant foods: polenta, chestnuts and marrons, cheeses from the local cheesemaker, and other typical regional products. There is also a Christmas market and Santa's house, designed especially for children, while visits to the Clock Tower and the bell tower of the church of Santa Maria dei Lumi enrich the experience.
Now in its many editions, the Living Nativity of Bassano in Teverina is organized by the Municipality together with the Pro Loco and the Bassanese Archaeological Group. Over the years, it has become a defining event for the entire community and one of the most appreciated Christmas destinations in Lazio, capable of attracting thousands of visitors between Christmas and Epiphany.
The 2025-2026 edition of the Living Nativity of Bassano in Teverina offered a renewed itinerary through 19 set-up caves, with over 160 performers in period costumes. The heart of the route was the cave entirely dedicated to the Nativity, while numerous historical scenes set in the 1200s came to life along the village streets.
