Art, photography, design, and Mediterranean flavors in the San Pantaleone district
The Leon Fest – Wonderful Mediterraneans is the summer festival that lights up the San Pantaleone district, the oldest core of the municipality of Vallo della Lucania, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Cilento region and Campania. For one week, the alleys of the ancient Corinoti area become an open-air museum: the works are not confined to an exhibition hall but are distributed along stairways, portals, and small squares, so that visiting the exhibition becomes a journey of discovery through the village. It is a simple and highly effective formula that breathes life back into a historic neighborhood often passed through in a rush, handing it over, evening after evening, to residents and visitors alike.
The heart of the festival is the participation of over forty artists—painters, sculptors, photographers, artisans, and creatives—who display their works and remain available to the public to discuss techniques, materials, and stories. There is none of the distance typical of large exhibitions: you can talk directly to the person who created the piece you are looking at, and it is precisely this proximity that gives Leon Fest its unique character.
Alongside the exhibitions, an evening program runs that changes its register every day, exploring four musical souls: classical and choral music, Cilento tradition, jazz, and pop. Piazza Cattedrale serves as a natural stage for the main events, with concerts, readings, book presentations, and performances by students from the local music training center. Admission is free, and the shows begin after dinner, when the temperature becomes pleasant and the district fills with life.
The title "Wonderful Mediterraneans" is not just a slogan: gastronomy is an integral part of the journey. Stalls set up along the route offer typical products of Cilento—a territory that gave its name and history to the Mediterranean diet—with tastings, show cooking, and traditional local peasant dishes. Art and cuisine coexist in the same alley, and it is normal to move from a sculpture to a board of local products in just a few meters.
The festival is born from the collaboration between the Municipal Administration of Vallo della Lucania and the Pro Loco Gelbison, with the involvement of the "Goitre-De Vita" Training Center and the FareAmbiente association. The concept is credited to Virginia Casaburi, city councilor with responsibility for Events, Tourism, and Entertainment, who described the festival as "an important opportunity to animate the historic center of San Pantaleone, enhancing beauty and identity through art, culture, and participation." The initiative enjoys the patronage of the Campania Region and is included in the Estate Vallese (Vallo Summer) program.
The event is scheduled for July, in the days leading up to the patronal feast of San Pantaleone, when the whole city is already in a festive mood. The exhibitions open in the late afternoon and remain visitable until evening, while the shows start around 9:00 PM. Those who arrive early can calmly walk the exhibition route in the light of the sunset, which has a special quality in the Cilento hinterland, and then stop for the evening concert.
Vallo della Lucania is one of the reference centers of the Cilento hinterland, a short distance from the coast and the hillside villages of the National Park. Leon Fest offers an extra reason to head from the coast towards the inland: a free, family-friendly evening where you can walk, look, listen, and eat well. For the foreign visitor, it is also the most direct way to understand what "Mediterranean" means today in a town in southern Campania.
The 2026 edition of Leon Fest – Wonderful Mediterraneans took place from July 18 to 25 in the San Pantaleone district of Vallo della Lucania, in the province of Salerno. Eight days of continuous programming, with scattered exhibitions open from the late afternoon and a different show every evening around 9:00 PM, almost always in Piazza Cattedrale.
The artistic project brought together over forty painters, sculptors, photographers, and artisans, present in person along the route to engage with the public. The musical program explored four different languages—choral and classical, Cilento tradition, jazz, and pop—accompanied by a book presentation, a moment dedicated to fashion, show cooking, and gastronomic stalls set up among the alleys.
The festival was born from the collaboration between the Municipality of Vallo della Lucania and the Pro Loco Gelbison, with the "Goitre-De Vita" Training Center and FareAmbiente, conceived by city councilor Virginia Casaburi. All events had free admission. At the end of the festival, a digital and paper catalog was provided, featuring the biographies and works of the participants.
Vallo della Lucania is located in the Cilento hinterland, in the province of Salerno. By car, it can be reached via the SS18 and the provincial roads that climb up from the Cilento coast. By train, the reference station is Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo, on the Salerno–Reggio Calabria Tyrrhenian line, connected to the center by local buses. Nearest airport: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi; alternatively, Naples-Capodichino.
The entire festival unfolds in the San Pantaleone district, with Piazza Cattedrale as a reference point for shows and the alleys of the ancient Corinoti area for the scattered exhibitions.
Free admission to all exhibitions and shows. The exhibitions open in the late afternoon (roughly from 6:00 PM), and evening shows start around 9:00 PM.
