About Legnanino a Saronno

Saronno celebrates Stefano Maria Legnani, known as il Legnanino, a great master of the Lombard Baroque, with an exhibition and a city-wide route. The painting 'Susanna and the Elders' is displayed in the Sala del Sindaco of Villa Gianetti, while Sunday guided tours lead to the discovery of Baroque traces in the library, the Church of San Francesco, and the collegiate church. An opportunity to rediscover Saronno's 17th-century artistic heritage, in the province of Varese.

In the Footsteps of Legnanino

With Legnanino, le sue tracce in città, Saronno pays homage to Stefano Maria Legnani (known as il Legnanino), one of the main protagonists of Lombard Baroque painting between the 17th and 18th centuries. The initiative, promoted by the Municipality of Saronno in the province of Varese, combines an exhibition and a widespread cultural route through the city's locations that preserve traces of the artist.

'Susanna and the Elders' at Villa Gianetti

The heart of the exhibition is the display of the painting 'Susanna and the Elders', set up in the Sala del Sindaco of Villa Gianetti. The work can be visited freely during the villa's opening hours, offering visitors the chance to admire Legnanino's hand up close and his mastery in the dramatic and luminous rendering of the figures.

The Baroque Route in the City

In addition to the exhibition, the initiative offers a route through Saronno's Baroque sites: the Civic Library, the Church of San Francesco, and the collegiate church, where traces of the period's art are preserved. The Sunday guided tours, organised in collaboration with the Associazione Cantastorie, lead the public to discover this often little-known heritage.

Enhancing Local Heritage

The municipal administration's objective is to promote a great 17th-century Lombard artist and make art history more accessible to citizens, enhancing local artistic heritage. For Saronno, the initiative is a way to rediscover its Baroque roots and offer residents and visitors a quality cultural itinerary in the heart of the province of Varese.
