The fire ritual for Saint Dominic the Abbot in the village of Villalago
Le Fanoglie of Saint Dominic are one of the most iconic and cherished traditions of Villalago, a small village in the Sagittario Valley in the province of L'Aquila, officially recognized as one of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages. Every year, on January 21st and 22nd, the community commemorates the anniversary of the death of Saint Dominic the Abbot by lighting great ritual fires—the fanoglie—that illuminate the streets and squares of the historic center.
The fanoglie are large conical stacks: vertical bundles of brushwood form the base, upon which increasingly larger beech logs are layered, while dry branches are placed in the center and at the top, pointing skyward. The fire is fed through an opening left at the base, where combustion begins. In the days leading up to the festival, the local youth collect wood from house to house: a moment of spontaneous, shared participation that builds anticipation for the lighting of the fires.
Each district—from Madonna di Loreto to Torrione and Sant'Angelo—builds its own fanoglia. At dusk on January 21st, the pyres are ignited in various spots throughout the village and in private courtyards. On January 22nd, the liturgical feast day of the Saint, the main town bonfire is officially lit in the central square following vespers, in the presence of civil and religious authorities.
Saint Dominic the Abbot (c. 951–1031) was a Benedictine monk venerated across a wide area of Central Italy, known as a protector against snake bites, rabid animals, and toothaches. According to tradition, upon leaving the monastery of San Pietro del Lago, he gifted one of his molars to the people of Villalago, which is now kept alongside other relics in the parish church's reliquary. The festival includes a solemn mass, vespers, and the kissing of the Sacred Relic.
Around the flames, the festival becomes a social gathering: sausages, potatoes, and other traditional peasant foods are cooked over the embers, alongside lake fish that characterize the territory of Villalago, which overlooks the scenic Lake of San Domenico. It is an intangible heritage made of handed-down gestures, ritual fire, and collective participation, capable of telling the deepest story of this Abruzzese village.
On January 21st and 22nd, 2026, Villalago renewed the rite of Le Fanoglie of Saint Dominic. On the evening of January 21st, the great bonfires were lit in the districts and private homes of the village, while on January 22nd, the day of Saint Dominic the Abbot's death, Bishop Michele Fusco presided over the solemn mass and vespers, then proceeded to the official lighting of the town's fanoglia together with Mayor Fernando Gatta. During the homily, the Bishop announced funding for the restoration of the parish church's historic organ, half of which is covered by the Church's 8x1000 tax allocation. An edition that combined faith, fire, and community participation, as per tradition.
Villalago can be reached by car from the Cocullo or Pratola Peligna motorway exits (A25), continuing along the SR479 road of the Sagittario Valley. The nearest train station is Anversa degli Abruzzi-Villalago-Scanno, on the Sulmona-Castel di Sangro line.
The ritual takes place every year on January 21st and 22nd; the fanoglie are lit at dusk. The solemn mass and vespers are held on January 22nd in the parish church.
The event is public and free of charge. Warm clothing is recommended for the mountain winter season.
