About Laga Rural Villages in Crognaleto

The Laga Rural Villages Cultural Festival is a traveling, widespread event that spans most of the year, traversing the mountain villages of the Apennines across Abruzzo, Marche, and Lazio. In Crognaleto, in the province of Teramo, the festival stops in the hamlets of Alvi and Frattoli: a day combining trekking along an ancient shepherd path reopened by the volunteers of the Alvi Pro Loco and a cultural meeting at the Manfredo Onofri Library in Frattoli, dedicated to the churches of the Upper Vomano valley and the cult of the Seven Sister Madonnas of the Laga.

A traveling festival through the villages of the Laga

The Laga Rural Villages Cultural Festival is one of the most original cultural events in the central Apennines. It is not concentrated in a single location, but is a traveling and widespread festival that unfolds over many months, from April until the Christmas season. Its stages touch about twenty municipalities distributed between Abruzzo, Marche, and Lazio, along the Laga Mountains massif, the Monti Gemelli, the Upper Aterno, and the Acquasanta Apennines. The event is promoted by the Borghi e Sentieri della Laga OdV association in partnership with FederTrek Escursionismo e Ambiente APS and the patronage of the twenty municipalities in the affected seismic areas.

The festival was born to promote the cultural revaluation and social regeneration of inland mountain areas, marked by depopulation and the 2016-2017 earthquake. The fifth edition, in 2026, revolves around the theme "Beyond the darkness of the earthquake: human value and cultural heritage in the villages that resist", coinciding with L'Aquila Italian Capital of Culture 2026.

The Alvi and Frattoli stop, hamlets of Crognaleto

In the Municipality of Crognaleto, in the province of Teramo (Abruzzo), the festival finds one of its most evocative stages in the hamlets of Alvi and Frattoli, small sandstone clusters nestled on the slopes of the Laga Mountains, in the Vomano valley at over a thousand meters above sea level. The day combines two souls of the event: walking in nature and cultural exploration.

The hiking heart of the stage is the trekking along an ancient shepherd path that connects Alvi and Frattoli, a route used for centuries by shepherds, woodcutters, and pilgrims heading to local sanctuaries, reopened for the occasion by the volunteers of the Alvi Pro Loco. The route retraces the devotional paths toward the churches of Santa Maria Apparens in Alvi and the Madonna del Carmine in Frattoli, returning a piece of the mountain's historical road network to the community.

The cult of the Seven Sister Madonnas of the Laga

In the afternoon, the event moves to the Manfredo Onofri Library in Frattoli, the village's cultural hub, for a meeting dedicated to the churches of the Upper Vomano and the traditions linked to the cult of the Seven Sister Madonnas of the Laga, a popular devotion that intertwines several Marian sanctuaries in the area. The central moment is the presentation of the book by scholar Alfredo Manilii, author of works on rural villages and places of worship in the Upper Vomano, with contributions from speakers from the academic world and local historical archives.

Culture, walking, and community

The Alvi and Frattoli stop is not just a hiking or literary moment: it is an encounter between those who live in these places and those who visit them, a slow and conscious tourism that combines nature, oral memory, religious history, and the identity of the villages that resist depopulation. It is the typical formula of the Laga Rural Villages Cultural Festival, which restores voice and path to a border territory between Abruzzo, Lazio, and Marche.

A widespread and participatory event

Participation in the festival stages is open to everyone and free of charge. For hikes, booking is usually required at least the day before with the indicated guide or contact person to ensure insurance coverage. The Crognaleto stage is curated by local entities, starting with the Alvi Pro Loco, and hosted by the local communities of the hamlets.
