The Easter hard-boiled egg game in the historic center of Castorano
There are traditions that withstand time because they need nothing: a hard-boiled egg, a square, and a great desire to be together are enough. This is the case for La Scuccetta, the Easter event in Castorano, a small municipality in the Province of Ascoli Piceno, in the southern Marche region. Every year, on Easter Sunday morning, the historic center of the village gathers in Piazza Roma to bring this ancient and beloved game to life.
The rules are as simple as they are exciting: two challengers clash the tips of their hard-boiled eggs. The one whose shell remains intact wins and takes the opponent's egg, while the one whose egg breaks is eliminated. The game continues, challenge after challenge, until the last intact egg. A good-natured battle that, amidst laughter and twists, can last a long time and captivate young and old alike.
The beauty of La Scuccetta is that it's age-agnostic: everyone participates, from the youngest children to those over ninety, who battle with the same enthusiasm. It is precisely this intergenerational mix that makes the event precious: the elders pass on to their grandchildren a game rooted in the ancient peasant customs of the Piceno region, and the festive day becomes an opportunity to strengthen family ties within the village.
For some years now, the Youth Council of Castorano has been coordinating the initiative, inviting children to creatively decorate the eggs they will then compete with. Sweet surprises are up for grabs for all participating children, crowning a morning designed to involve and entertain them.
La Scuccetta is not unique to Castorano: the hard-boiled egg game is a widespread tradition throughout the Piceno region. In fact, in Ascoli Piceno, on the following Easter Monday, there is even a World Championship held in Piazza Arringo. However, in Castorano, the event retains its most authentic and village-like dimension, experienced as a community ritual in the heart of the hamlet. A simple and genuine opportunity to discover the Easter traditions of the Marche region away from mass tourist circuits.
The 2026 edition of La Scuccetta took place on the morning of Sunday, April 5th, Easter Day, in Piazza Roma in Castorano. Once again this year, the historic center's square was filled with participants of all ages, from the youngest children to those over ninety, ready to battle it out with the last hard-boiled egg.
The Youth Council of Castorano coordinated the initiative, inviting children to decorate the eggs before the competition and offering sweet surprises for all participating children. An event that, in its simplicity, confirmed its role as a moment of meeting and cohesion for the village families.
