The ancient arboreal rite of spring that transforms Fossalto into a theatre of myth and memory on May 1st
The Pagliara Maje Maje is one of the most evocative expressions of Molise's popular culture. In Fossalto, in the province of Campobasso, an arboreal rite of archaic origin, linked to the propitiatory cults of spring and the fertility of the earth, is renewed every May 1st.
The heart of the festival is the Pagliara: a large conical structure woven with branches, wild herbs, and seasonal flowers, which is worn by a man until it almost entirely covers him. Under this vegetal mantle, accompanied by the sound of the bagpipe and the voice of a singer, the protagonist crosses the village from house to house, intoning the verses of the "Maje Maje" – an ancient invocation that greets May and the explosion of nature.
More than a spectacle, the Pagliara is a moment of strong collective identity: the village transforms into a place suspended between myth, memory, and belonging. The rite celebrates rebirth, the cycle of the seasons, and the indissoluble bond between man and the land of Molise. It is an intangible heritage carefully preserved by the community and also promoted by the Italian Network of Popular Culture.
The day combines the sacred and the convivial dimensions: from the morning blessing to the symbolic exchange of the floral cross between the parish priest and the mayor, from tastings of local products (broad beans, legumes, local wine) to the itinerant lunch and evening music. The event is organized by the Pro Loco "Eugenio Cirese" with the Municipality of Fossalto, the support of the Molise Region, and the collaboration of the Italian Network of Popular Culture.
On May 1st, 2026, Fossalto renews its most iconic rite. The day begins with the blessing and procession of the Pagliara through the village streets, continues with convivial moments, and concludes with live music. Organized by Pro Loco "Eugenio Cirese", the Municipality of Fossalto, the Molise Region, and the Italian Network of Popular Culture.
Fossalto can be reached by car from Campobasso (about 30 km) following the provincial roads towards Alto Molise. The village is small: it's best to park at the entrance and continue on foot.
The rite takes place every year on May 1st, from morning until late evening.
Wear comfortable shoes to follow the procession along the cobbled streets of the historic center. Participation is free.
