An 18th-century historical re-enactment in Laurino, between the Ducal Palace and Piazza del Foro
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the town of Laurino, in the province of Salernoโone of the most picturesque villages in the Cilento hinterland and Campaniaโthe "La Fario del Duca" historical re-enactment takes place every summer, set in the latter half of the 18th century. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Laurino in collaboration with the municipal administration and the Youth Forum, with the stated goal of rediscovering and celebrating the community's historical memory, culture, and ancient traditions.
Laurino sits at an altitude of over 500 meters, overlooking the Calore valley within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. It was the seat of a duchy until the early 19th century: the Spinelli family was the last to hold the fief, and it is to that historical era that the re-enactment is dedicated.
The evening opens with a costumed procession departing from the Duke's palace. Don Giuseppe Spinelli parades with his family, the town's patricians, the clergy, and the common people in meticulously detailed attire: the duchess's gown, in particular, is entirely handmade by local seamstresses. The procession traverses the alleys and stairways of the historic center, which host reconstructions of ancient crafts and scenes of rural life depicting the 18th-century countryside of Laurino.
The heart of the event is Piazza del Foro, where three theatrical episodes unfold, accompanied by live baroque music:
In recent editions, the finale has been enriched by the reconstruction of the storming of the castle, featuring the Cavalieri della Bolla Pontificia (Knights of the Papal Bull) from Cava de' Tirreni, who bring weapons, armor, and choreographed combat to the square.
Like many re-enactments in Cilento villages, "La Fario del Duca" is above all a collective effort: dozens of residents of all ages dress as extras, sew costumes, prepare sets, and rehearse scenes for weeks. The event is part of a broader municipal strategy aimed at leveraging historical identity to combat depopulation and attract visitors back to the Calore valley. The same objective drives "Christmas at the Duke's Court," the winter version of the ducal tale hosted in the palace in December, created as part of the regional "Terre Ritrovate" project.
Visitors arriving for the re-enactment will find a village worth exploring by day: the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore with its frescoes and wood carvings, the remains of the Ducal Palace, the medieval bridges over the Calore, and the stone alleys of the old town. The river, one of the clearest in the southern Apennines, is home to otters and remains one of the area's natural attractions. Mid-August also coincides with the celebrations for Saint Helena, the town's patron saint.
The re-enactment is traditionally held in August, in a single evening: in 2025, it took place on August 16th. Dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced; updates are released by the Pro Loco Laurino and the Municipality.
At the time of writing, neither the date nor the program for the 2026 edition of "La Fario del Duca" in Laurino, in the Cilento hinterland in the province of Salerno, have been published. The event is, however, a recurring fixture on the village's summer calendar, traditionally held in August: the 2025 edition took place on August 16th.
The structure of the re-enactment, curated by the Pro Loco Laurino with the municipal administration and the Youth Forum, includes a costumed procession departing from the ducal palace, scenes of ancient crafts and rural life along the alleys of the historic center, and theatrical episodes in Piazza del Foro dedicated to the 18th century of Duke Don Giuseppe Spinelli.
To find out the exact date, it is best to follow the channels of the Pro Loco Laurino and the Municipality, or contact the organizers directly.
Laurino is located in the Cilento hinterland, in the Calore valley, about 90 kilometers from Salerno. By car, take the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway (exits at Sicignano degli Alburni or Petina, or Battipaglia followed by the SS18 and the provincial road towards the Calore valley) and continue along the provincial roads climbing up the river; the final stretch is a mountain road with curves and inclines. The nearest train station is Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo, which is connected by local bus lines. The reference airport is Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi.
The re-enactment takes place in the evening, in the streets and squares of the historic center. No information on entry tickets has been published: to check times, the procession's starting point, and any reservation requirements, it is best to contact the organizers directly.
The village is on a slope and the streets are cobbled: comfortable shoes are recommended. Even in August, evenings at over 500 meters of altitude can be cool, so it is best to bring a light jacket. The historic center is restricted to traffic during the event: it is advisable to leave your car in the designated spaces at the entrance to the village and continue on foot. Those staying for several days can combine the visit with the Cilento National Park, the trails along the Calore, and the other villages in the valley.
