Roasted chestnuts and autumn flavours in the mountain village of Bormida
La Castagnata is the autumn festival (sagra) of Bormida, a small mountain municipality in the upper Val Bormida in the province of Savona. Nestled among the hinterland woods, Bormida celebrates in October the fruit that has marked the history of mountain communities: the chestnut, a precious resource for local food and economy for centuries.
The festival takes place in the square of the Chiesa hamlet, the heart of the village, where the stands of the Pro Loco Bormida offer steaming roasted chestnuts, original chestnuts served with cream, mulled wine to warm up, fritters, and typical desserts, including Fazzini specialties. A triumph of autumn flavours in a warm festive atmosphere.
The event is included among the Authentic Ligurian Events 2026, the program with which the Liguria Region supports traditional and identity-based festivals of the territory. The recognition enhances La Castagnata as an authentic expression of mountain peasant culture and as an opportunity to promote the Savona hinterland.
A beloved holiday destination for its nature and tranquility, Bormida is one of the small pearls of the upper Val Bormida. La Castagnata is the ideal opportunity to discover this mountain village and its authentic flavours, on an autumn day filled with woods, traditions, and conviviality.
