The historic goliardic Carnival race on the Bellocchio slope, in Asiago
The Kopa Karukkola is one of the most beloved Carnival traditions in Asiago and the Seven Municipalities Plateau. For over sixty years, young and old have gathered for a race with a goliardic spirit, where competitors launch themselves down the Bellocchio slope with their bizarre inventions: masks, self-built sleds, skis, and anything else suitable for descent.
The race is divided into several stages – ascent, descent, slalom, acrobatics, sprint relay, vertical and horizontal challenge – on the Bellocchio slope. Along the route, there are refreshments with wine, food, and local specialties, in the true spirit of a village festival. The day concludes with a piñata event at the town hall and a party in the square.
More than a competition, the Kopa Karukkola is a great collective spoof: the "Kopà " – the trophy – is awarded to the most fun group, not the fastest. It is one of the three events that make up Asiago's traditional Carnival, along with the Children's Carnival in the Square and the ancient Cimbrian festival of the Schella Marz, in the province of Vicenza.
The 2026 edition of the Kopa Karukkola took place on Saturday, February 21, in Asiago, with a meeting at 3:00 PM in front of the Albergo Alpi on Corso IV Novembre. The goliardic race was held on the Bellocchio slope, concluding with a piñata event at the town hall and a party in the square.
Asiago can be reached by car from the A31 Valdastico (Piovene Rocchette exit, Strada del Costo) or from the A4 via Vicenza. By train to Bassano del Grappa or Vicenza, then by bus. In winter, winter tires or chains are recommended.
Free event and open to all. Meeting point and start in the historic center of Asiago, with the race on the Bellocchio slope and final party in the square.
