Kopa Karukkola

A Sixty-Year Goliardic Challenge

The Kopa Karukkola is one of the most beloved Carnival traditions in Asiago and the Seven Municipalities Plateau. For over sixty years, young and old have gathered for a race with a goliardic spirit, where competitors launch themselves down the Bellocchio slope with their bizarre inventions: masks, self-built sleds, skis, and anything else suitable for descent.

Descents, Slaloms, and Acrobatics

The race is divided into several stages – ascent, descent, slalom, acrobatics, sprint relay, vertical and horizontal challenge – on the Bellocchio slope. Along the route, there are refreshments with wine, food, and local specialties, in the true spirit of a village festival. The day concludes with a piñata event at the town hall and a party in the square.

The Spirit of Altopianese Carnival

More than a competition, the Kopa Karukkola is a great collective spoof: the "Kopà" – the trophy – is awarded to the most fun group, not the fastest. It is one of the three events that make up Asiago's traditional Carnival, along with the Children's Carnival in the Square and the ancient Cimbrian festival of the Schella Marz, in the province of Vicenza.
