The handmade kite competition at the Villa Comunale in Aci Sant'Antonio
The Kite Festival is one of the most beloved and anticipated events in Aci Sant'Antonio, a town in the Metropolitan City of Catania resting on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna, in Sicily. Organized by the Pro Loco of Aci Sant'Antonio APS, the festival has been a recurring annual appointment for over twenty years, attracting families, children, and kite enthusiasts from across the Etna region.
The heart of the event is the handmade kite competition, which is open to everyone: adults and children are invited to build and fly kites of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Each kite carries a theme and a meaning, and after the flight demonstrations, a jury evaluates the entries and awards prizes divided by category and thematic area.
The awarded categories include:
In addition to these, there is an overall prize for the best kite of the day and a critics' choice award. Several master kite-flyers also participate in the event, offering the public impressive flight demonstrations with their own creations.
The festival takes place in the Villa Comunale of Aci Sant'Antonio, with the entrance on Via Aldo Moro, generally during the spring season. It is a free, open-air, family-friendly day, perfect for those who want to spend a few hours outdoors surrounded by color, wind, and creativity, all against the backdrop of Mount Etna.
More than just a competition, the Kite Festival is a moment of togetherness that unites the community of Aci Sant'Antonio. Participation is free, and all contestants receive a token of recognition in a festive atmosphere that celebrates imagination and the joy of being together. For the little ones, it is also a chance to discover the world of kites in a fun and creative way.
The twenty-second edition of the Kite Festival was held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Villa Comunale of Aci Sant'Antonio (entrance via Via Aldo Moro), starting at 9:00 AM. As per tradition, the event was organized by the Pro Loco of Aci Sant'Antonio APS and saw the participation of families, children, and master kite-flyers.
The competition awarded prizes to the kites in the categories of stability, color, theme, construction techniques, and originality and artistry, along with the assignment of the overall prize and the critics' choice award.
