About Jujube Festival

The Festa della Giuggiola is the festival that, on the first two Sundays of October, celebrates an ancient and precious fruit in Arquà Petrarca: the jujube. Through the streets of the medieval village, one of the most beautiful in Italy, the jujube is transformed into liqueurs, jams, sweets, and the famous 'brodo di giuggiole' (jujube broth), while costumed figures, standard-bearers, drummers, and a craft market take the town back in time. In the background, the wines of the Euganean Hills and the charm of Francesco Petrarch's home.

Petrarch's Village Celebrates an Ancient Fruit

The Jujube Festival is one of the most characteristic food and wine events of the Veneto autumn. It takes place in Arquà Petrarca, in the province of Padua, a medieval village nestled in the Euganean Hills and famous for being the last home of the poet Francesco Petrarca. Listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, the town owes part of its fame to this fruit: the jujube (Ziziphus jujuba), small, sweet, and with an unmistakable flavor.

The Jujube in All Its Forms

During the festival, the jujube becomes the absolute protagonist: it is tasted fresh or transformed into liqueurs, jams, sweets, and typical dishes. The most famous product is the 'brodo di giuggiole', the ancient liqueur that gave rise to the saying 'to be overjoyed' (literally 'to go into jujube broth'). Along the village streets, a craft market unfolds with stalls, tastings, and local products, including the wines of the Euganean Hills.

A Dive into the Middle Ages

The event has a strong re-enactment element: costumed figures, standard-bearers, drummers, and shows animate the narrow cobbled streets, while expert bakers prepare breads and focaccias in wood-fired ovens according to ancient recipes. Organized by the Pro Loco, the Jujube Festival is now a well-established tradition that attracts thousands of visitors every year, offering an experience that combines taste, history, and landscape in one of the most evocative places in the Veneto region.
