The Nativity comes to life in the medieval village of the Simbruini Mountains
There is no edition scheduled in 2026 for this event. This page remains accessible to archive the history of the manifestation and will be updated if a new edition is announced.
In Jenne, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital nestled in the Simbruini Mountains Regional Natural Park, the nativity scene is not an addition to the village: it is the village itself. The Borgo Vecchio district, with its cobbled alleys, stone arches, and cellars and stables carved into the rock, offers a backdrop that no theater could ever replicate. Throughout the holiday season, the streets of the historic center host a life-sized artistic nativity scene, complete with mannequins and meticulously detailed settings; then, on specific dates, the mannequins give way to real people, and the representation comes to life.
The event, titled "The Savior is born in Jenne", has been organized since 1986 by the Municipality of Jenne in collaboration with the Pro Loco di Jenne APS, the Faedum Association for the Promotion of Art and Culture, and the parish of Sant'Andrea Apostolo. Over the decades, it has become one of the most iconic Christmas events in the Aniene Valley, so much so that it has been recognized by the Lazio Region as a historic event and included in the calendar of Christmas events promoted by the Department of Tourism. The 35th edition was held between December 2024 and January 2025.
The heart of the representation is the community. Pro Loco members, local youth, entire families, and occasionally professional actors wear traditional early 20th-century Jenne costumes and portray the Holy Family, shepherds, the Magi, and figures of mountain trades: the blacksmith, the spinner, the charcoal burner, the baker, and the basket maker. The tools used are authentic, recovered from the village houses, and provide a faithful portrait of daily life in the Lazio Apennines before modernization. The scenes are arranged along a path that crosses the district, with the church of Santa Maria in Arce being one of the most evocative spots.
The schedule has remained almost unchanged over the years: the representation takes place on December 26th and January 5th, starting around 6:00 PM, when the evening darkness and the lights multiply the scenic effect. The Epiphany evening is traditionally the most anticipated, as it coincides with the arrival of the Three Wise Men: the procession, with its sumptuous costumes and precious gifts, concludes the Nativity story.
The living nativity is the main event of a broader Christmas program, curated by the Municipality and the Pro Loco with the support of the Lazio Region. In recent editions, the program has included sacred and folk music concerts in the parish church, organ recitals, evenings of words and music, the New Year's concert with a soprano, baritone, and instrumental ensemble, as well as New Year's Eve celebrations in the square. An offering that invites you to stay more than one night in the village.
Jenne stands at over 800 meters above sea level, overlooking the Aniene valley, a short distance from the Benedictine monasteries of Subiaco and in the heart of the Simbruini Mountains Park. Visiting the living nativity means discovering a village that remains silent and authentic in winter, far from mass tourism, and witnessing a collective ritual that the community has been carrying on for nearly forty years. It is an experience that combines devotion, rural memory, and high-altitude landscape: one of the most sincere ways to experience Christmas in Lazio.
For the winter of 2025-2026, the Borgo Vecchio district of Jenne did not host the usual living nativity representation. The suspension was communicated by the Visit Val d'Aniene tourist portal, which attributes it to an internal choice by the Pro Loco di Jenne; there are no official announcements of alternative dates or a published program for the event.
Therefore, the evenings of December 26th and January 5th, which for nearly forty years brought about fifty performers in Jenne costumes and the procession of the Three Wise Men to the Simbruini Mountains village, remain suspended for this season. The streets of the historic center maintained the Christmas atmosphere thanks to the life-sized artistic nativity scenes, with reconstructions of traditional trades.
To know if the tradition will resume in the coming holidays, it is advisable to follow the channels of the Municipality of Jenne and the Pro Loco di Jenne APS, which publish the Christmas program in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
By car from Rome: A24 motorway to the Vicovaro-Mandela exit, then SS5 Tiburtina Valeria and SR411 towards Subiaco, then the provincial road to Jenne (approx. 85 km, 1h30). From Subiaco, the village is about twenty kilometers away via a mountain road: in winter, it is advisable to check road conditions and travel with winter tires or snow chains on board.
The historic center is pedestrianized and features steep slopes: comfortable shoes with non-slip soles and very warm clothing are recommended, as the representation takes place outdoors in the evening and temperatures often drop below freezing. Parking areas are available at the entrance to the village.
Admission to the representation is free. For updated dates and programs, it is best to contact the Pro Loco di Jenne APS or consult the channels of the Municipality of Jenne, which publish the Christmas program in the weeks leading up to the holidays.
