An experimental performing arts off-festival in Amorosi, in the heart of the Sannio region
The Jana Off-Festival was established in 2026 in Amorosi, a town of just over three thousand inhabitants in the province of Benevento, within the Valle Telesina in Campania. The first edition took place from June 24th to 28th, 2026, bringing a rare project to a town of this size: an off-festival dedicated to experimental performing arts, designed for emerging artists, collectives, and figures who are difficult to categorize and who make research their daily practice.
The name draws inspiration from the janare, the rebellious and non-conformist female figures of Sannio folklore: a reference chosen to represent an independent space, marginal to official circuits and therefore truly free. The festival's imagery revolves around the wanderer, those who move and refuse imposed boundaries, amidst itinerant communities, bartering, and hospitality.
The heart of the event is Palazzo Maturi, a historic 1775 residence that transforms into a cultural citadel for five days: the outdoor Theatre for evening shows, the Library for exhibitions, and the Small Garden for concerts, show cooking, and late-night events. Alongside these are the Sala Gonzaga, dedicated to afternoon performances, and the Municipal Auditorium, which hosts workshops. Excursions depart on foot towards the Volturno river and the wineries of Ruviano, while the Volturno Park welcomes those arriving with tents.
The live programme alternates between contemporary prose, dance-theatre, and research-based performances, featuring companies and directors primarily from Campania. The first edition featured shows such as Veneri by La Giostra, Il Cavallo di Troia by Cavalli Ermeneutici, Ego by Ianus Cultura, Salomé: autopsia di un'identità by Anthea Ipsale, Puro Puro Puro! by Civil Words, Beh, dai, Carino by Fucina Zero, and Amártēma, produced by the company promoting the festival. Each evening concludes in the garden with live music or DJ sets.
The Jana Off-Festival is not just a schedule: a large part of the day is occupied by workshops open to everyone, by reservation and included in the ticket price. Intaglio printing, cyanotype, sound construction, dance and the rituals of the taranta, creative writing, and theatrical improvisation are accompanied by workshops for children, which conclude with a public presentation. The morning walks, led by local guides, combine the discovery of the Volturno river landscape with visits to local wineries: a way to link the artistic programme to the agricultural landscape of Sannio.
The event is promoted by the LiberaMente A.P.S. association in Amorosi in collaboration with Amártēma Teatro, with the support of the Municipality of Amorosi and local entities such as the "Carmen Romano" Municipal Library. The project was launched thanks to a crowdfunding campaign and an open call aimed at artists from all over Italy. The stated goals are clear: to enhance the cultural heritage of Benevento, give visibility to emerging artists, create relationships between local and national artistic communities, and stimulate the participation of citizens of all ages.
Those looking for an intimate festival, on a human scale and with an accessible ticket, will find an unusual formula here: you can follow a whole afternoon of workshops, have dinner in the garden, watch two shows, and sleep in a tent just a few steps from the river. It is one of the most interesting proposals to emerge recently in the Campania hinterland, and a good excuse to discover the Valle Telesina off the beaten track.
From Wednesday, June 24th to Sunday, June 28th, 2026, Amorosi hosted the first edition of the Jana Off-Festival, promoted by LiberaMente A.P.S. with Amártēma Teatro. The Valle Telesina town transformed into a sprawling stage, with Palazzo Maturi as its headquarters: the outdoor theatre for evening premieres, the Library for exhibitions, and the Small Garden for concerts, show cooking, and final evenings.
Each day followed the same rhythm: workshops and guided excursions early in the morning, workshops in the early afternoon, a performance at 6:00 PM in Sala Gonzaga, the main show at 9:00 PM, and live music or DJ sets from 10:30 PM. The collective exhibitions in the Library remained open every afternoon with free entry.
Alongside the shows, the 2026 edition gave space to local initiatives: the DolceMente social pastry workshop by the iCare cooperative with its show cooking, the exhibition "Attraverso….gli occhi" by young Sannio artist Ludovica Buonanno, and the presentation on June 26th in the Small Garden of a plaque to karateka Ginevra Olimpia Capece by Mayor Carmine Cacchillo, an initiative of the "Carmen Romano" Municipal Library. A successful debut that brought emerging artists from all over Italy into dialogue with the local community.
Workshops and excursions were included in the daily ticket but had limited capacity, with mandatory reservation.
Workshops and excursions have limited capacity and require booking: it is advisable to write to [email protected] a few days in advance. For the morning walks, you will need suitable shoes, a hat, and water; for the evenings in the garden, a light sweater.
