Three days of living history in the Cilento village of Tortorella
Intramoenia – Medieval Festival is the event through which the Municipality of Tortorella, a small town in the Cilento hinterland in the province of Salerno, Campania, brings its medieval past back to life for three days. The name says it all: intra moenia, «within the walls», as it is the ancient core of the village—stone alleys, small squares, portals, and noble palaces—that becomes the sprawling stage for the event. This is not just a themed market, but a cultural project that combines research, education, and entertainment centered on the Middle Ages of Southern Italy.
Tortorella has just under five hundred inhabitants and sits at an altitude of nearly 600 meters, between the mountains of the inner Cilento and the Gulf of Policastro. During the festival, the village fills with historical re-enactors, musicians, storytellers, and artisans: the community does not just provide a backdrop, but actively participates in the storytelling.
The festival opens with a symbolic rite of welcome for guests, followed by an inaugural procession that winds through the entire village up to the Palazzo Marchesale, featuring performers in period costumes, flag-wavers, and local officials. The ceremony is accompanied by music and stories of the local identity; in the inaugural edition, the moment was sealed by the presentation of a sword forged by master craftsman Giovanni Mariella.
The evening continues with a theatrical night walk through the alleys, built around the village's stories and legends: a format that makes the most of the intimate scale of the historic center, where every corner can become a stage.
The daytime heart of the festival is the medieval market, brought to life by specialized artisans working in front of the public: blacksmiths, scribes, herbalists, weavers, and masters of other traditional arts. The workshops are not just for display: they offer demonstrations and open labs, designed to showcase the techniques and gestures of an era when manual skill was the true engine of village economies.
What sets Intramoenia apart from many re-enactments is its scientific component. Saturday morning is dedicated to a seminar featuring professors and scholars from Italian universities, with talks on the history of Southern Italy, medieval medicine, and the spirituality of pilgrimage routes. Medievalism is presented not as nostalgia, but as a tool to re-examine contemporary issues in the South's inland areas. The «Leonardo da Vinci» Higher Education Institute of Sapri also participates in the organization, involving its students.
The final day focuses on entertainment and family audiences: falconry demonstrations, live early music, and period games accessible to all ages. Throughout the three days, there are also historical re-enactments, theatrical performances—entrusted in the inaugural edition to the Compagnia Artisti Cilentani—and medieval dances, while thematic guided tours led by costumed storytellers share the history and architecture of the village.
The festival is promoted by the Municipality of Tortorella, led by Mayor Nicola Tancredi, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and funding from the European Union – NextGenerationEU as part of the PNRR. Organizational coordination is handled by the company My Fair, directed by Mafalda Inglese, together with local associations and artisans. Following the success of the first edition, the municipal administration has announced work on a second edition, with the goal of expanding the network to neighboring towns.
Intramoenia is also an opportunity to discover a village off the beaten path, with its Palazzo Marchesale, historic churches, and trails leading up to the mountains. The area, between the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park and the coast of the Gulf of Policastro, combines the hinterland and the sea in just a few kilometers: a perfect excuse for a weekend in the most authentic Cilento.
The first edition of Intramoenia – Medieval Festival transformed Tortorella into a sprawling theater for three days, from Friday to Sunday. Alleys, squares, and palaces of the Cilento village became a single living stage where the community became part of the narrative, amidst historical processions, artisan workshops, academic insights, and traveling performances.
The festival was promoted by the Municipality of Tortorella with the support of the Ministry of Culture and funding from the European Union – NextGenerationEU, with the coordination of the company My Fair and the collaboration of the IIS «Leonardo da Vinci» of Sapri, local associations, and local artisans. The turnout, described as significant and constant over the three days, prompted Mayor Nicola Tancredi to already announce work on the second edition, with the idea of involving neighboring towns as well.
The program is reconstructed from organizer communications and local press; exact times were released on the Borgo di Tortorella social channels.
