Anthropological masks from around the world meet in Tricarico
The International Gathering of Anthropological Masks (R.I.M.A.) is one of the most anticipated and engaging cultural events in Tricarico. Founded on the initiative of the Pro Loco of Tricarico in 2011, over the years it has grown to become a reference point for scholars, enthusiasts, and folk groups from all over the world.
The gathering celebrates the magic of masks, popular traditions, and collective rites, weaving together past and future, local identities, and international horizons. Recent editions have seen delegations from Bolivia, Portugal, Spain, Romania, Bulgaria, and several African countries parade, alongside groups from Italian regions. The 2025 edition attracted over 20,000 visitors, with 28 international masked groups and more than 600 costumed participants.
The program alternates spectacular moments with in-depth discussions: the Anthropological Dialogues, immersive exhibitions, the "Strada degli Artisti" (Street of Artists), food and wine tours like "Sorsi e Morsi" (Sips and Bites), evening concerts, and tributes to Lucanian folk music. The parades animate the town's symbolic locations, from Viale Regina Margherita to Piazza Garibaldi, up to the Palazzo Ducale and the Torre Normanna.
Home to the famous historical Carnival with its cow and bull masks, Tricarico (Province of Matera) offers an ideal setting for R.I.M.A.: an Arab-Norman village that makes masking a deep part of its identity.
In 2026, Tricarico is once again preparing to welcome international masked groups for a new edition of the Gathering of Anthropological Masks, typically held at the beginning of summer.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced in the coming weeks by the Pro Loco of Tricarico. Based on recent editions, the event typically spans two days with parades of international masks along Viale Regina Margherita, Anthropological Dialogues, immersive exhibitions, food and wine tours, and evening concerts in the historic center.

Tickets: generally free entry to the gathering events.
Accommodation: B&Bs and farm stays in Tricarico and nearby towns; Matera and Potenza for larger options.
