About Brunian Contest

The International Brunian Contest is an annual philosophical and literary competition that draws high school and university students from across Italy and abroad to Nola. Participants are challenged to engage with the works of Giordano Bruno, the Nola-born philosopher burned at the stake in 1600. The three-day event features a written exam at the Giosuè Carducci Classical Lyceum, guided tours of local sites associated with Bruno, and academic conferences, culminating in an awards ceremony at the Historical Archaeological Museum. It is a unique event that blends research, education, and civic memory in the province of Naples.

A philosophy competition in the city of Giordano Bruno

The International Brunian Contest is one of Italy's most significant cultural initiatives dedicated to Giordano Bruno. It takes place in Nola, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania—the city where the philosopher was born in 1548 and from which he derived the name he famously used to sign his works: «il Nolano» (the Nola native). Promoted by the Municipality of Nola in collaboration with the Giosuè Carducci State Classical Lyceum, the Giordano Bruno Literary Park Foundation, and the Meridies association, the contest brings dozens of students from across the country and Italian schools abroad to the city each year.

How the competition works

The heart of the event is a written exam held at the main campus of the Carducci Lyceum. Contestants are provided with an excerpt from Bruno's works, accompanied by critical documentation; from this material, participants must craft a short, well-argued, and original essay. The text changes every year and is selected by an examining committee composed of university professors and scholars of the history of philosophy. Many schools organize internal selections before designating their representatives.

  • Who can participate: Students in their final years of secondary school, both Italian and international, and—in more recent editions—university students as well.
  • The Exam: Drafting a short essay based on a text by Bruno.
  • Prizes: Cash awards for the top finishers, with specific prizes for university students and Italian schools abroad, as established by the municipal call for entries.

More than just a contest: three days of culture

The event extends far beyond the exam. The program includes welcoming the students and school delegations, guided tours of sites related to Bruno and the city's historical-archaeological heritage, study sessions, and round-table discussions open to the public. In the 2025 edition, for example, discussions focused on the relationship between the philosopher's thought, the art of memory, and artificial intelligence, featuring nationally renowned scholars. The awards ceremony is traditionally held at the Historical Archaeological Museum of Nola, attended by local and school authorities.

Why Nola

Filippo Bruno, later Giordano in religion, was born in Nola in 1548 and burned alive in Rome, in Campo de' Fiori, on February 17, 1600. His hometown has made him a core element of its identity: the contest was created to keep the knowledge of his works alive among younger generations, ensuring that Bruno is not merely remembered as a symbol of free thought, but actually read and studied. For visiting students, the stay in Nola is also an opportunity to discover a city with a long history, ranging from the Roman-era brick amphitheater to the Historical Archaeological Museum of the Agro Nolano, as well as the Cathedral and the palaces of the historic center.

A networking event

The International Brunian Contest involves universities and cultural institutions: in recent years, the University of Naples «L'Orientale», the Federico II University, La Sapienza in Rome, and various Italian Cultural Institutes abroad have collaborated, promoting the call for entries to students in Italian communities worldwide. Over two thousand students have taken part in the editions held so far. For the Agro Nolano region, this is an appointment that combines cultural promotion, dialogue between schools and universities, and tourism development for the historic center.

Information and call for entries

The official call for entries, including requirements, deadlines, and prize amounts, is published annually on the Municipality of Nola's website and promoted by the Giosuè Carducci Classical Lyceum, universities, and Italian Cultural Institutes. Interested schools must submit their applications by the deadlines indicated in the notice, generally in the first months of the year.
