The official Christmas festival in Benevento: over one hundred events from December 5th to Epiphany
InCanto di Natale is the official Christmas festival of Benevento, promoted and organized by the Municipality of Benevento in partnership with the Benevento Città Spettacolo Foundation, the same institution behind the summer's Benevento Città Spettacolo festival. Rather than a single event, it is a widespread program that, from early December until January 6th, hosts over one hundred initiatives spread across the city's squares, theaters, churches, and historic palaces. Music, theater, dance, readings, children's workshops, art tours, exhibitions, and markets come together in a program designed to keep the city vibrant throughout the festive season.
The symbol of the event is the Cant'Albero, a spectacular twenty-meter tree installed in Piazza Castello, in front of the Rocca dei Rettori. This structure, created by the Città Spettacolo Foundation, is brought to life by scenic lighting, projections, and musical accompaniment, and has become the most recognizable image of Christmas in Benevento over the years. Its lighting is complemented by the large tree in Piazza IV Novembre and the artistic illuminations along Corso Garibaldi, the main squares, and key landmarks of the historic center.
The festival unfolds in stages throughout the city. Piazza Federico Torre hosts the Santa Claus Village, featuring activities, entertainment, and workshops designed for children and families. Piazza Santa Sofia, located next to the UNESCO-listed Lombard church, serves as the venue for the inauguration, concerts, and weekend craft and local produce markets. The Christmas market is held in Piazza Castello, while Via Traiano is dedicated to nativity scenes, guided tours, and musical performances.
The artistic heart of the event beats within the city's theaters. The Vittorio Emmanuele Municipal Theater on Corso Garibaldi hosts the main events, ranging from symphonic concerts to comedy and dance shows, alongside the Mulino Pacifico, the Teatro de La Salle, the Piccolo Teatro Libertà, and the Teatro San Marco. The historic churches of the center—Santa Sofia, Sant'Agostino, San Domenico, the Annunziata, and SS. Salvatore—become the natural setting for concerts, musical itineraries, sacred art exhibitions, and theatrical performances.
The administration has adopted a participatory approach: the program is born from a public call open to associations, foundations, theater companies, parishes, and volunteer groups, who propose their own events to be included in the festival's unified calendar. This is how the program exceeds a hundred initiatives without burdening the municipal budget, with most events being free to attend and involving local cultural entities, from the "Nicola Sala" Conservatory of Music to the local Pro Loco associations.
As the capital of its namesake province in Campania, Benevento is a city of many layers, from the Roman Arch of Trajan to the Lombard complex of Santa Sofia. In December, its compact historic center is perfect for strolling among illuminations, nativity scenes, and concerts. InCanto di Natale also serves as a gateway to the Christmas season in the Sannio region, which, during the same weeks, offers living nativity scenes, village markets, and Epiphany rituals. A visit to the city can easily be combined with exploring the hills of Taburno and the wine routes featuring Falanghina and Aglianico.
The 10th edition of InCanto di Natale opened on Friday, December 5, 2025, at 6:30 PM in Piazza Santa Sofia, with a greeting from Mayor Clemente Mastella and a performance by the children's choir of Benevento's schools, directed by the "Nicola Sala" Conservatory of Music. This was followed by the lighting of the large tree in Piazza IV Novembre, the Cant'Albero (about twenty meters tall) in Piazza Castello, and the historic center's illuminations, accompanied by the arrival of Santa Claus and his elves.
The program, built through a public call for associations, foundations, theater companies, and volunteer groups, exceeded one hundred initiatives at no cost to the municipal budget. The squares hosted the Santa Claus Village in Piazza Federico Torre, the Christmas market in Piazza Castello managed by Sannitamente, and weekend craft and local produce markets in Piazza Santa Sofia; along Via Traiano, nativity scenes, guided tours, and musical initiatives took place.
The Vittorio Emmanuele Municipal Theater hosted Francesco Cicchella with "Tante belle cose" (December 13, 6:00 PM), the Santo Stefano Concert "L'Anno che verrà" dedicated to Lucio Dalla and Lucio Battisti (December 26, 8:00 PM), the Royal National Ballet of Georgia with "Fire of Georgia" (December 29), and the Grand New Year's Concert by the International Orchestra of Campania, now in its 33rd edition (January 1, 2026, at 6:00 PM and 8:15 PM). The Mulino Pacifico, Teatro de La Salle, Piccolo Teatro Libertà, and Teatro San Marco featured plays, musicals, and family shows, while the churches of Santa Sofia, Sant'Agostino, San Domenico, Annunziata, and SS. Salvatore hosted concerts, musical itineraries, and sacred art exhibitions. The festival concluded with Epiphany, following the arrival of the Befana in a vintage car along Corso Garibaldi on January 4.
By train: Benevento Centrale station, connected to Naples, Caserta, Rome, and Foggia. From the station, the historic center can be reached in a few minutes by city bus or in about twenty minutes on foot. By car: take the Benevento exit on the A16 Naples–Canosa motorway, or via the SS 7 Appia and SS 88 roads. By plane: the nearest airport is Naples Capodichino, about 70 km away.
Events are spread throughout the historic center: Piazza Castello, Piazza Santa Sofia, Piazza IV Novembre, Piazza Federico Torre, Corso Garibaldi, Via Traiano, the Vittorio Emmanuele Municipal Theater, and various city churches and theaters. It is advisable to leave your car in the parking lots surrounding the center, which is largely pedestrianized during festive evenings.
Events in the squares, markets, illuminations, and exhibitions are free to enter. Most theater performances require a ticket, which can be purchased at the Municipal Theater or via the i-ticket online circuit. Information: Fondazione Benevento Città Spettacolo, tel. +39 334 7288886, [email protected].
The busiest period is from the Immaculate Conception bridge to Epiphany. It is best to check the daily program, as many events take place in the evening and are concentrated on weekends. Wear warm winter clothing: the city is at an altitude of about 130 meters, but Sannio evenings are often cold and windy.
