The medieval historical re-enactment of Arce, in the province of Frosinone
In Terra Arcis is the medieval historical re-enactment that brings the center of Arceโa village in the Ciociaria area of the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazioโto life every summer. For one evening, the charming Piazza Sant'Eleuterio is transformed into an authentic medieval village, populated by ladies, knights, soldiers, men-at-arms, and artisans who transport visitors back to the atmosphere of the 13th century. The event is one of the most anticipated highlights of the Arce Summer calendar and attracts crowds from across the Liri Valley.
The re-enactment is rooted in a real historical event: the 1229 clash between the local Arce militia and the papal soldiers, known as clavisegnati, followed by the arrival of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia in Arce in 1230. Around these facts, the community has built a collective narrative that weaves together grand European history and local memory, recalling the strategic role that the village and its fortress played in the power struggles between the Papacy and the Empire.
The festival unfolds throughout the evening with a rhythm that combines conviviality and spectacle:
Numerous local residents participate in the re-enactment: no acting experience is required to join the pageant, only enthusiasm and a desire to get involved in a project that engages many local families every year.
Strolling through the In Terra Arcis stalls means rediscovering the crafts of the past, from traditional trades to daily chores, immersed in the glow of torches and the sounds of tradition. The event promotes the historical and architectural heritage of Arce, inviting residents and tourists to experience the historic center in a unique way and to learn about the community's roots.
The food stalls offer local Ciociaria specialties reinterpreted with a medieval twist: an opportunity to taste the flavors of the region in a scenic setting. The evening, which is free to attend, is designed for audiences of all ages and combines fun, culture, and the promotion of local products.
In Terra Arcis is promoted by the Pro Loco Arce in collaboration with the Compagnia del Feudo and the Pro Loco Ceprano, with the support of the Municipality of Arce and the Department of Culture and Tourism. The re-enactment is part of the rich Arce Summer calendar, which enlivens the village's squares and alleys with music, tradition, and culture every year.
