The century-old December 8th fair in the heart of Irpinia

The Immaculate Conception Fair in Grottaminarda, in the province of Avellino, is one of the longest-running and most cherished events in all of inland Campania. Local records trace its origins to the early 20th century—some even date it back to the late 1800s—and the December 8, 2025 edition was celebrated as the 120th documented edition. This is not an event created for tourists; it is a town fair that has grown alongside the local community, surviving wars, earthquakes, and even two years of forced hiatus. Over the years, it has become a collective ritual that marks the beginning of the Christmas season in Irpinia.
Councilor for Commerce Franca Iacoviello described it as "a century-old event that needs no introduction," highlighting how the fair represents both a moment of social gathering and a concrete opportunity for growth for local businesses.
The fair traditionally falls on the day of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8th, and lasts all day. In recent editions, stalls have been operational from approximately 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. This timing ties the event to the religious calendar and the official start of the Christmas shopping season, when Irpinian families head out to the streets for their first holiday purchases and to reconnect with one another.
For one day, the entire town center turns into one large exhibition area. According to the organization of the last edition, the streets and squares involved include:
The categorization of goods is not just a bureaucratic detail; it is the organizational innovation that has made the fair more accessible and safer in recent years by clearly separating food areas from clothing and home goods.
The range of products is typical of the great traditional fairs of the South, with about three hundred stands in recent editions:
Nougat, in particular, is the fair's signature product: we are in a land where Christmas confectionery traditions run deep, and the stalls selling it are always among the most crowded.
Beyond commerce, the fair is a day of widespread entertainment. In recent editions, the center has been enlivened by a street band in Christmas costumes, itinerant bagpipes and ciaramelle—the pastoral music that accompanies Advent throughout Southern Italy—and an afternoon concert in Piazza XVI Marzo. The themed lights, the large Christmas tree, and the nativity scene set up in the square complete the scenery.
The Immaculate Conception Fair is not a neighborhood festival: the final report from the last edition estimates about 120,000 visitors throughout the day, with people arriving from all over Irpinia, Sannio, Puglia, and the Naples area. Such an influx requires a significant security and traffic management plan, handled by the Municipality in collaboration with the Municipal Police, Carabinieri, and volunteers, with first aid stations located along the route.
Those who arrive in Grottaminarda on December 8th find something that no longer exists in shopping malls: a real crowd, the chatter of vendors, the scent of roasted chestnuts and nougat, and chance encounters between neighbors who meet once a year. It is the most authentic way to step into the Irpinian Christmas and, at the same time, an opportunity to discover the Ufita Valley, its villages, and its gastronomy.
As of today, the Municipality of Grottaminarda has not yet released the official calendar for the 2026 fair, nor the related entertainment program. However, the event is a fixture in the local calendar: it traditionally takes place on December 8th, the day of the Immaculate Conception, for the entire day along the streets of the town center.
The administrative process is well-established: in the autumn, the Authority publishes a public notice for exhibitors—in past editions with a deadline at the end of October—assigning stalls in chronological order of application and in compliance with the sectorization provided by the safety plan. Only after that phase are the final hours, the map of product sectors, and the scheduled shows communicated.
Those intending to participate as visitors can in the meantime refer to the layout of the last editions: hundreds of stalls between Corso Vittorio Veneto, Piazza XVI Marzo, and the surrounding streets, a food area separated from general trade, free parking in peripheral areas, and free admission.
By car — Grottaminarda has its own exit on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (approx. km 81), making it easily accessible from Naples, Avellino, Benevento, and Puglia. On the day of the fair, the center is closed to traffic: it is advisable to arrive early.
By bus — the town is served by the Air Campania bus station, with connections to Avellino, Naples, and the towns of the Ufita Valley.
In recent editions, the Municipality has provided free parking in several locations: Air bus station (covered), Via dei Cipressi (cemetery area), Piazzale della Repubblica (Employment Center), Piazza Europa (Via Condotto), San Michele Church (Via Assise), and Via Tratturo (sports field).
The fair is open all day on December 8th, roughly from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Admission is free: you only pay for what you purchase at the stalls.
