Easter rites, celebrations, and processions in the Valle Caudina
In Moiano, a small town in the province of Benevento overlooking the Valle Caudina, Holy Week is the most deeply felt and widely attended event of the entire religious year. For one week, the town's rhythm shifts: celebrations multiply, parish groups prepare for weeks, and the streets of the center become the natural stage for the Passion rites. The Municipality of Moiano announces the religious events organized by the parish each year, a sign of how these days are lived as a collective heritage rather than just a devotional appointment.
As in all Catholic communities, the journey begins on Palm Sunday with the blessing of olive branches and the reading of the Passion, continuing through the days of the Paschal Triduum:
Precise times and procession routes are announced by the parish during the weeks of Lent; this is why the municipal notice regarding religious events is awaited and read with such attention each year.
The spiritual center of the town is the Church of San Pietro Apostolo, on Via Nuova San Pietro, which also houses the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Libera. The 15th-century building features three naves divided by pillars and preserves exquisite polychrome marble altars created by master Carlo D'Adamo between 1730 and 1741. Here, a Black Madonna is venerated—one of about one hundred and fifty documented in Italy. Tradition links this devotion to the liberation of the Benevento territory from the siege of the Byzantine Emperor Constans II in 663, and more deeply, to an ancient cult of a Greek icon of the Virgin of the Sign, evidenced by the discovery of 10th-century Byzantine coins on the site where the ancient church of the Madonna once stood.
Holy Week is not the only devotional event in Moiano. On June 29th, the town celebrates its patron saint, San Pietro Apostolo, while from September 7th to 9th, the festival of the Madonna della Libera takes place—one of the most evocative occurrences in the Sannio region. The statue is carried in procession through the streets for several hours, and the penitential practice of the strascino still survives, with devotees crawling across the church floor as a sign of humility. Together, these three moments define the identity calendar of the Moiano community.
Moiano has just under four thousand inhabitants and sits at an altitude of 271 meters, on the southwestern slopes of Mount Taburno, along the Isclero river. It serves as a gateway between the provinces of Benevento and Caserta, bordering Airola, Bucciano, Sant'Agata de' Goti, Tocco Caudio, Forchia, and Arienzo. The hamlet of Luzzano preserves the churches of San Vito and San Nicola Magno, along with a historic center crossed by characteristic cammini—a maze of narrow alleys between houses. Also worth seeing is the Church of San Sebastiano, featuring frescoes by Tommaso Giaquinto. Visitors arriving for the Easter rites will find a village in the interior of Campania where the landscape of Mount Taburno, fine Sannio cuisine, and popular devotion blend quite naturally.
Do not expect a tourist attraction: here, Holy Week remains a community affair—sober and authentic—where the visitor is welcomed as a participant rather than a spectator. Those wishing to follow the celebrations and processions should check the schedule in advance with the parish or on the Moiano Municipality website, as times and routes may vary from year to year depending on the date of Easter and organizational availability.
In 2026, Easter fell on April 5: Moiano's Holy Week opened on Sunday, March 29, with Palm Sunday and the blessing of olive branches, concluding with the Resurrection Masses. The Paschal Triduum occupied the central days, with Holy Thursday on April 2, Good Friday on April 3, and the Easter Vigil on the night of Holy Saturday, April 4.
The Municipality of Moiano, in the province of Benevento, published the notice dedicated to the religious events for Holy Week 2026 managed by the parish of San Pietro Apostolo, seat of the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Libera. The document with the exact times of the celebrations is no longer available online: for the complete program, and for future editions, the parish remains the primary reference.
Church of San Pietro Apostolo - Sanctuary of the Madonna della Libera, Via Nuova San Pietro 15, 82010 Moiano (BN), Campania. Celebrations take place in the parish church; processions involve the streets of the town center.
By car: Moiano is located in the Valle Caudina, about thirty kilometers from Benevento and a short distance from the border with the province of Caserta, between Airola, Sant'Agata de' Goti, and Arienzo. This is the most convenient option, with parking available in the streets around the center.
By train: The EAV Benevento-Cancello line via Valle Caudina, which serves the nearby Arpaia-Airola-Sant'Agata de' Goti station, is suspended for modernization works (reopening announced for 2027): it is best to plan your arrival by car or public bus.
All celebrations and processions are free and open to everyone, with no reservation required.
Triduum liturgies are usually held in the late afternoon or evening (the parish's weekday Masses are at 7:00 PM): bring a jacket, as the evenings in late March and early April are still cool. Wear comfortable shoes for the processions, dress modestly for church, and be discreet with photography during the rites. For updated times, you can contact the parish at +39 0823 711917.
