Historical Re-enactment of the Battle of Solferino and San Martino

The Risorgimento Returns to Desenzano

On June 24, 1859, the hills south of Lake Garda were the scene of one of the decisive battles of the Italian Risorgimento: in Solferino and San Martino, the Franco-Piedmontese army faced the Austrian army in a bloody clash that spurred Henry Dunant to found the Red Cross. Every year, to commemorate these events, Desenzano del Garda (province of Brescia) hosts a historical re-enactment, which in 2026 celebrates the 165th anniversary.

Encampments and Battle at Parco del Laghetto

The heart of the event is the Parco del Laghetto, where period military encampments are set up. Around 120 re-enactors from Northern Italy and France, in uniforms faithful to the three armies of 1859, present parades, drills, military education, and vanguard skirmishes, culminating in the main battle re-enactment. Camp life, with tents, kitchens, and encampments, allows the public to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the era.

The Grand Gala at San Martino

On the opening evening, at the Parco Monumentale di San Martino della Battaglia, the Grand Gala of Italian Unity is held, a celebratory moment with music and guests. The event is organized by the Associazione Cultura e Rievocazione Imperi (ACRIMPERI) with the patronage of the city.

The re-enactment is a free event suitable for all ages: visitors to Desenzano del Garda during these days will find a program that combines historical dissemination, entertainment, and collective memory, in one of the most beloved locations on the Brescia side of the lake.
