Metaphysical painting at Desenzano Castle
For an entire summer, the Castle of Desenzano del Garda, in the province of Brescia, becomes Giorgio de Chirico's home. The exhibition 'A Timeless World,' open from May 17 to October 4, 2026, brings to the lake shores the painter who revolutionized 20th-century art by inventing metaphysics: deserted squares, mannequins, long shadows, and a silence that seems to stop time.
The exhibition brings together about twenty works by de Chirico, placed in dialogue with works by other protagonists of the metaphysical and 20th-century period: Alberto Savinio, the artist's brother, Mario Sironi, Filippo de Pisis, Mario Tozzi, and others. A special section is dedicated to theatrical sketches related to D'Annunzio's productions, from the Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera, a few kilometers from Desenzano.
The exhibition is curated by Giordano Bruno Guerri, president of the Vittoriale and one of Italy's most renowned historians and communicators, and organized by Il Cigno GG Arte with the Municipality of Desenzano del Garda. The choice of the castle as the venue is not coincidental: the medieval fortress, with its walls and keep, creates a striking contrast with the suspended atmospheres of metaphysical painting.
Overlooking the historic center and the lakefront, Desenzano Castle is one of the city's symbols. Visiting the exhibition also means climbing the ramparts and enjoying a panoramic view of the lake and the surrounding morainic plain. A double opportunity, combining great 20th-century art with Garda's historical heritage.
The opening is set for May 17, 2026, at 11:30 AM at Desenzano Castle. The exhibition, curated by Giordano Bruno Guerri and organized by Il Cigno GG Arte, remains open for almost five months, until October 4. The exhibition path brings together about twenty works by Giorgio de Chirico, presented alongside artists of his time and theatrical sketches from the Vittoriale.
