The landzette, the Napoleonic masks of the Carnival of the Great St Bernard Valley
The Historical Carnival of the Coumba Freida (the "cold valley", i.e., the Great St Bernard Valley) is one of the most fascinating in Italy. In Gignod, a municipality along the road to the Great St Bernard Pass in the Aosta Valley Region, the absolute protagonists are the landzette, masks with vibrant costumes that parade from village to village.
Tradition links the birth of the carnival to the passage of Napoleon Bonaparte and his troops through the Great St Bernard Pass in the spring of 1800. The landzette costumes are said to be an allegorical and popular interpretation of the French soldiers' uniforms, reinvented with the colours and symbols of alpine peasant culture.
For days, the landzette travel through the numerous hamlets of Gignod — from Excenex to Arpuilles, from Variney to Seyssinod and Meylan — entering homes, dancing, and bringing joy and good wishes to the inhabitants. It is a rite of passage that banishes winter and ushers in the good season, experienced with great participation by the entire community.
The climax arrives on Shrove Tuesday, with the evening of dancing and the burning of the carnival at midnight, a symbolic gesture that closes the celebrations and marks the farewell to winter.
The 2026 edition of the Historical Carnival of the Coumba Freida in Gignod confirms its two-phase structure: an initial day on February 7 and the final weekend from February 14 to 17, with Shrove Tuesday on the 17th. The landzette follow a consolidated schedule as they travel through the municipality's hamlets, concluding with the traditional burning of the carnival.
In addition to these, there is the initial outing on Saturday, February 7. Info: Grand Combin tourist office, [email protected].
Gignod is located on the SS27 of the Great St Bernard, a few kilometres from Aosta. By car: A5 motorway, Aosta exit, then SS27 towards the Great St Bernard. By train: Aosta station and local bus towards the valley.
The landzette visits take place in the hamlets, usually starting in the morning. For the updated schedule and points of passage, it is advisable to consult the Municipality of Gignod or the Grand Combin tourist office ([email protected]).
