The parade of allegorical floats in the village of the Tolfa Mountains
The Historic Carnival of Tolfa is one of the most anticipated winter events in Tolfa, a hilltop village in the province of Rome overlooking the Tolfa Mountains. In 2026, the allegorical float parade reached its 30th edition: a significant milestone for a festival that has grown year after year thanks to the voluntary work of local associations, schools, artisans, and merchants. More than just a show, the Tolfa Carnival is a community effort: for months, local groups design, build, and decorate floats in workshops, sew costumes, and rehearse the choreographies they later perform in the streets before thousands of spectators.
The highlight is the grand parade on Carnival Sunday. The procession sets off in the early afternoon from the Poggiarello district and winds through the streets and squares of the historic center—Via Roma, turned into a pedestrian zone for the occasion, and Piazza Giacomo Matteotti—before concluding in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the heart of the village, where the festivities continue with music and dancing. The parade is often led by dancers in 19th-century period costumes, followed by the handcrafted floats accompanied by their respective masked groups: recent editions have featured over 500 participants.
Each float is handmade by local Tolfa associations, which reinvent themselves every year with different themes:
The Carnival is also an opportunity to discover Tolfa, a medieval-origin village dominated by the ruins of the Frangipane Fortress, famous for its leather craftsmanship (the "catana" bag) and the tradition of the butteri, the cowboys of the Lazio Maremma. The Municipality of Tolfa promotes the event together with the Borgo Experience Business Network, the Pro Loco, and local merchants, with the support of civil protection and volunteers, making the Carnival a showcase of the territory's vitality in the heart of the Lazio region.
The parade takes place on Carnival Sunday, between February and early March depending on the liturgical calendar, and admission is free. During the procession, the historic center is closed to traffic: it is advisable to arrive early and park in the areas outside the village.
The 2026 edition marked a historic milestone: the 30th parade of allegorical floats in Tolfa. On Sunday, February 15, the procession started at 2:30 PM from the Poggiarello district, led by 19th-century period dances, and traveled through the streets of the center—with Via Roma transformed into a pedestrian zone from 1:00 PM—until the final celebration in Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
Three floats competed, all handmade by local associations: "The Circus" by the "Giuseppe Verdi" Music Band, a circus tent animated by dancing clowns, trapeze artists, and magicians, complete with a final popcorn and cotton candy cart; "Angels and Demons" by the Panico Paura mega-group, dedicated to the eternal struggle between good and evil with black and white wings; and "The Chessboard" by the Tolfa Scout Group, a large moving chessboard with kings, queens, rooks, bishops, knights, and pawns.
With over 500 participants and thousands of spectators arriving from the coast and Rome, the day—promoted by the Municipality of Tolfa with the Borgo Experience Business Network and local merchants—confirmed the Carnival as one of the most popular festivals in the Tolfa Mountains.
Tolfa is located in the Tolfa Mountains, about 20 km from Civitavecchia and 70 km from Rome. By car: take the A12 motorway or the Via Aurelia to Civitavecchia, then the provincial road to Tolfa; from Rome, you can also take the Bracciano–Manziana route. By bus: Cotral connections from Civitavecchia and Bracciano. The nearest train station is Civitavecchia (Rome–Pisa line).
On the day of the procession, parking and traffic restrictions apply in the historic center (Via Roma, Piazza Matteotti, Piazza Vittorio Veneto): please arrive early and use the parking lots at the edge of the village.
The event is free and takes place outdoors along the streets of the village.
