A grassroots palio in the heart of Ciociaria

The Hastiludium Montis - Palio of the Monticiano Districts is one of the freshest historical re-enactments in the Lazio region. The first edition was held in July 2025, initiated by the Comitato Pro Palio Monticiano, a group of volunteers dedicated to showcasing the medieval past of Monte San Giovanni Campano, a village in the province of Frosinone overlooking the Liri Valley. The name derives from the Latin hastiludium, a term evoking spears, lances, and ancient chivalric competitions—a choice that perfectly sets the tone for an event centered on skill, pageantry, and community rivalry.

The six competing districts

The heart of the palio is the competition between the six districts that make up the municipal territory. Each fields its own team, colors, and loyal supporters:

• Capoluogo
• Anitrella
• Chiaiamari
• Colli
• La Lucca
• Porrino, winner of the first edition

In the months leading up to the event, the districts prepare costumes, banners, and athletes: a collective effort involving entire families that has already turned the palio into a defining identity for the town.

The historical pageant and costumes

The most spectacular moment is the historical pageant that opens the event. Participants in period costumes, entirely handmade by the districts' volunteer tailors, parade through the historic center to the sound of drums and flag-wavers. The re-enactment is the result of a blend of historical research, craftsmanship, and popular passion, with the winning district of the previous year earning the honor of leading the procession.

Medieval games and challenges

Over the following days, the teams face off in scheduled events: medieval-inspired games of skill and strength, played in a spirit of healthy competition with a large public turnout. Alongside the adult palio, the Children's Palio has been established, featuring themed games and the awarding of a pennant to the winning team—a way to instill a sense of belonging to their district in the younger generations.

The castle and the memory of Saint Thomas

Monte San Giovanni Campano houses one of the most evocative fortresses in lower Lazio, the D'Avalos Castle, linked to the memory of Saint Thomas Aquinas, the town's patron saint. A theatrical performance dedicated to an episode from the saint's life accompanied the consecration of the palio and the presentation of the teams during the first edition. With its stone alleys and ancient walls, the village provides a natural stage for an event designed to be an immersive experience that transports the town back to the Middle Ages.

A project for the territory

From the outset, the organizers declared the palio's goal: to promote sport, social cohesion, and the tourism and cultural development of the Monticiano area. In just two editions, the event has already become the town's most anticipated summer appointment, involving local schools—as demonstrated by the Gagliardetto (pennant) competition reserved for students of the local comprehensive school.
