Harvest and Middle Ages meet in the Scaliger castle
The Grape Festival of Monzambano (Province of Mantua) is one of the most anticipated autumn events in the morainic hills of Garda. For several days, the historic center of the town fills with food stalls, craft markets, live music, and the Tasting Counter of Mantuan Wines, where you can sample the best products from local wineries. A festival celebrating the agricultural and wine-making tradition of this corner of Lombardy on the border with Veneto.
The heart of the event is the Medieval Historical Re-enactment that enlivens the Scaliger Castle, an ancient manor perched on the hill called Monte Zambano, on the banks of the Mincio River. The castle streets are populated by over 300 re-enactorsโnobles, commoners, jesters, knights, archers, guardsmen, musicians, magicians, and witchesโamidst bonfires, falconers, flag-wavers, and the roll of drums. The moments of "time freeze," where all re-enactors remain motionless as in a living tableau, are particularly evocative.
With decades of history, the Grape Festival and Historical Re-enactment is now a classic on the Mantuan and Gardesan calendar. The program alternates the re-enactment with a sumptuous procession of nobles, demonstrations of ancient crafts, archery competitions, and period markets, all set against a landscape that makes Monzambano one of the most fascinating destinations in the Mincio hills.
For 2026, the Grape Festival of Monzambano is expected in September, following the tradition that places it during the grape harvest days. The program includes food stalls, the Tasting Counter of Mantuan Wines, craft markets, and live music, while the Scaliger Castle hosts the Medieval Historical Re-enactment with over 300 re-enactors, knights, flag-wavers, and falconers. The precise dates and detailed program will be announced by Pro Loco Monzambano closer to the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by Pro Loco Monzambano in the weeks preceding the event. Based on recent editions, the festival includes:
