About Giro dell'Etna

The Granfondo Giro dell'Etna is a road cycling race that draws hundreds of enthusiasts to the slopes of Europe's highest volcano every spring. Starting from the charming Piazza Vittorio Emanuele in Nicolosi, in the province of Catania, the event features two competitive routes—the 120 km Granfondo with 2,220 meters of elevation gain and the 83.65 km Mediofondo—alongside the "Io C'ero" amateur ride. It is an event that blends sport, the Etna landscape, and local promotion.

A granfondo in the shadow of Mount Etna

The Granfondo Giro dell'Etna is the premier cycling event for the southern side of the volcano. Organized by the ASD Gruppo Sportivo Rosso Azzurri, the race kicks off from the central Piazza Vittorio Emanuele in Nicolosi, in the heart of the Catania province, and winds its way through the most evocative and characteristic villages of the Etna region. It is a challenge that tests the legs and hearts of both competitive cyclists and amateurs, set against a unique backdrop of lava flows, vineyards, and the historic towns of the Etna Park.

The routes

The event offers two competitive races and one amateur ride:

  • Granfondo: 120 km with 2,220 meters of elevation gain, the most demanding route, passing through the characteristic Etna villages;
  • Mediofondo: 83.65 km with 1,708 meters of elevation gain, highlighted by the breathtaking climb of Scorciavacca;
  • "Io C'ero" Brevet: a non-competitive amateur ride on the 120 km course, open to those who want to experience the route without the pressure of a race.

A race of national significance

Over the years, the Granfondo Giro dell'Etna has gained increasing sporting prestige, hosting championship titles: the race is valid as a CSAIn National Championship and awards the FCI Junior Regional Champion jersey. The event is dedicated to the memory of Francesco Compagnini, an amateur cyclist who passed away prematurely, and features testimonials from the sports world, such as professional cyclist Filippo Fiorelli and journalist Giacomo Crosa.

A weekend of sport and community

The Giro dell'Etna is more than just a race: it is a full weekend of initiatives that bring Nicolosi to life and involve families. Alongside the competitions, there are recreational activities for children, entertainment, and opportunities to engage with the public, creating a mix that makes the event a true celebration of sport and a showcase for the Etna territory. Nicolosi, known as the "Gateway to Etna," provides the ideal setting for an event that unites cycling passion with the promotion of Sicily.
