High-altitude trail running in the heart of the Gran Sasso in Pietracamela
The Gran Sasso Trail is the mountain running event that brings Pietracamela to life every late August. This historic village in the province of Teramo is nestled at the foot of the Gran Sasso's Teramo slope. Organized by the Gran Sasso Trail ASD sports association, the event invites athletes and enthusiasts to test themselves on the most evocative trails of the massif, located within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. The start and finish lines for all races are located in the charming Piazza degli Eroi, in the town center.
The event offers routes of increasing difficulty, ensuring everyone can find a challenge suited to their preparation:
The course unfolds along mountain paths, dirt roads, and short stretches of asphalt, featuring steep climbs and technical descents that require focus and experience.
The Gran Sasso Trail is designed as a celebration of sport open to the entire community. While athletes tackle the courses, companions and families can join a hike to discover the trails of Pietracamela, while the little ones take center stage in the Baby Run. At the end of the day, a convivial gathering with a full meal for all athletes brings participants and the public together in Piazza degli Eroi.
Pietracamela, with its stone houses and medieval alleys, is one of the iconic villages of the Abruzzo mountains and a historic starting point for mountaineering on the Gran Sasso. Running along its trails means traversing beech forests, high-altitude pastures, and breathtaking views of the Corno Grande, the highest peak in the Apennines. The Gran Sasso Trail thus combines a passion for outdoor sports with the promotion of a territory of great natural and cultural value, both in the municipality of Pietracamela and the entire Abruzzo region.
The 2026 edition of the Gran Sasso Trail, the second of the event, is scheduled for Sunday, August 30, 2026, in Pietracamela (TE). Compared to the first edition, the range of races has expanded to three distances to welcome athletes of all levels.
All races start and finish in Piazza degli Eroi. During the day, there will also be a Baby Run for children and a hike for companions and families to discover the trails of Pietracamela.
Pietracamela can be reached by car from the Teramo motorway exit (A24), heading up towards Prati di Tivo along the SP43. From Rome and Pescara, access is via the A24. Parking areas are available in the village and nearby hamlets.
Registration for the races is done online via the ENDU platform. Bib pickup is scheduled for the Saturday afternoon before the race and on the morning of the event in Piazza degli Eroi.
