About Gran Sasso Trail

The Gran Sasso Trail is the mountain running event that transforms Pietracamela, one of the most beautiful villages in Abruzzo, into the capital of high-altitude trail running every late August. Starting and finishing in Piazza degli Eroi, the event features three races of increasing distance through the peaks, valleys, and beech forests of the Gran Sasso massif, in the heart of the National Park. From the 40 km Trail del Gigante to shorter routes suitable for beginners, it is a day of sport, nature, and community in the province of Teramo.

The Gran Sasso Trail in Pietracamela

The Gran Sasso Trail is the mountain running event that brings Pietracamela to life every late August. This historic village in the province of Teramo is nestled at the foot of the Gran Sasso's Teramo slope. Organized by the Gran Sasso Trail ASD sports association, the event invites athletes and enthusiasts to test themselves on the most evocative trails of the massif, located within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. The start and finish lines for all races are located in the charming Piazza degli Eroi, in the town center.

Three races for every level

The event offers routes of increasing difficulty, ensuring everyone can find a challenge suited to their preparation:

  • Trail del Gigante — approximately 40 km with 3,100 meters of elevation gain; the flagship race, technical and demanding, winding through the wildest peaks and valleys of the Gran Sasso;
  • Madonnina Half Trail — 21 km with 1,200 meters of elevation gain, alternating fast sections and technical passages immersed in nature;
  • Pietracamela Trail — 11 km with 500 meters of elevation gain, designed as an introduction to mountain running in a high-altitude environment.

The course unfolds along mountain paths, dirt roads, and short stretches of asphalt, featuring steep climbs and technical descents that require focus and experience.

More than just a race

The Gran Sasso Trail is designed as a celebration of sport open to the entire community. While athletes tackle the courses, companions and families can join a hike to discover the trails of Pietracamela, while the little ones take center stage in the Baby Run. At the end of the day, a convivial gathering with a full meal for all athletes brings participants and the public together in Piazza degli Eroi.

One of the most beautiful villages in Abruzzo

Pietracamela, with its stone houses and medieval alleys, is one of the iconic villages of the Abruzzo mountains and a historic starting point for mountaineering on the Gran Sasso. Running along its trails means traversing beech forests, high-altitude pastures, and breathtaking views of the Corno Grande, the highest peak in the Apennines. The Gran Sasso Trail thus combines a passion for outdoor sports with the promotion of a territory of great natural and cultural value, both in the municipality of Pietracamela and the entire Abruzzo region.
