The Historic Carnival of the Paper Town in the Heart of Vallesina
The Gran Carnevale di Chiaravalle is the most anticipated winter event in this town in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region, known as the 'paper town' for its historic link to paper production. Organized by the Pro Loco Chiaravallese with the patronage of the Municipality of Chiaravalle, the Carnival transforms the town center into a large open-air stage for days, filled with allegorical floats, confetti, music, and masks of all kinds.
In its 43rd edition in 2026, the Gran Carnevale di Chiaravalle obtained the prestigious official recognition of Historic Carnival that year, a title that certifies the long continuity and cultural value of a festival deeply rooted in the community. The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats, entirely built by the voluntary work of local groups and associations, accompanied by choreography and musical entertainment along Corso Matteotti.
During the main day, the traditional masked contest takes place, with prizes awarded in several categories: the largest masked group, the most original mask, and the most creative masked couple. There is also a prize draw, which each year offers valuable shopping vouchers. The festival has always been a moment of great involvement for sponsors, merchants, and citizens, who together liven up the streets of the center.
A section of the program is entirely dedicated to families: the Children's Carnival, with games, entertainment, and masks, takes place on Viale Montessori and traditionally closes the festivities on Shrove Tuesday. Between one parade and another, the calendar also includes cultural and theatrical events, such as the show linked to the 'Riso di Carta' award.
The 43rd edition of the Gran Carnevale di Chiaravalle marked an important milestone: for the first time, the event obtained the official title of Historic Carnival. Organized by the Pro Loco Chiaravallese with the support of the Municipality of Chiaravalle, sponsors, and local merchants, it attracted around 10,000 people despite difficult weather conditions.
The heart of the celebrations was the parade weekend, with a program that extended until Shrove Tuesday with events for all ages.
Chiaravalle is located in the province of Ancona, in the lower Vallesina. By car, it can be reached in a few minutes from the Ancona Nord (A14) motorway exit. The town is served by the Chiaravalle railway station on the Ancona-Rome line, and the Marche Airport (Falconara) is a few kilometers away.
The main parade and events are held in the historic center, along Corso Matteotti; the Children's Carnival takes place on Viale Montessori. Parking and traffic restrictions are in effect in the center during the parades.
Participation in the parades and public events is free. Some side events (dinners, theater shows) may require a ticket or reservation.
