Saint Valentine's Day in the castle of Paolo and Francesca
Every year, around Valentine's Day, the village of Gradara (Province of Pesaro and Urbino, Marche) dons its romantic attire and becomes Gradara d'Amare. The cobblestone streets of the historic center, the walls, and the famous Malatestiana Fortress transform into a romantic setting where history, legend, and enchantment intertwine. It's one of the most anticipated winter events in the Marche region and a must-visit for couples seeking something more poetic than a restaurant dinner.
Gradara is no ordinary village when it comes to tales of love: according to tradition, it was within these very walls that the tragic passion between Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Polenta unfolded, immortalized by Dante in the 5th Canto of the Inferno in the Divine Comedy. "Amor, ch'a nullo amato amar perdona" (Love, which exempts no beloved from loving): the verses of the Supreme Poet still echo in the village alleys today, and the entire event revolves around this timeless story of forbidden love, intrigue, and secrets that have marked the history of the Castle.
During the Valentine's Day weekend, the village offers a rich program of experiences designed for couples and families:
There are also small romantic rituals that have become symbols of the event: the registry of lovers to leave their names, the Love Selfie in historical settings, and the Wishing Well to make a wish for two.
Part of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy' circuit, Gradara is one of the best-preserved medieval castles on the peninsula. Visiting it during Gradara d'Amare means experiencing the charm of the Fortress, the ramparts, and the Malatestiana Court in an intimate and festive setting, where the courtly love of the Middle Ages takes center stage once again. The event is organized by Pro Loco Gradara in collaboration with the Municipality of Gradara, and it represents one of the signature events of the village's winter calendar.
For Valentine's Day 2026, the village of Gradara offered a program identical on both Saturday, February 14th, and Sunday, February 15th, dedicated to love and sweetness. The heart of the event featured guided tours of the Malatestiana Fortress dedicated to the legend of Paolo and Francesca, immersive theatrical narrations of the 5th Canto of the Divine Comedy, and fire shows by the Malatestiana Court. In the evening, the historic center was illuminated exclusively by candlelight, creating an intimate and fairytale atmosphere.
In the village, throughout the event: the registry of lovers, the Love Selfie, and the Wishing Well.
By car: A14 motorway, exit at Cattolica-San Giovanni in Marignano, then a few kilometers inland. By train: Cattolica-San Giovanni-Gabicce station, followed by a bus or taxi to Gradara. The nearest airport is Rimini-Miramare.
Guided tours and many experiences require mandatory booking (limited places, up to 25 people per session). Info and bookings: Pro Loco Gradara, tel. +39 0541 964115 / +39 340 1436396, email [email protected]. Some events are free.
Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestone streets and warm clothing: most events take place outdoors on February evenings. Arrive early to enjoy the candlelit atmosphere of the historic center.
