About Gradara d'Amare

For Valentine's Day, the medieval village of Gradara, in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, transforms into "Gradara d'Amare": two days dedicated to lovers within the walls of the Malatestiana Fortress, the setting of the legendary story of Paolo and Francesca told by Dante. Guided tours, recitations of the 5th Canto of the Divine Comedy, fire-eater shows, candlelit evenings, and the registry of lovers bring the atmosphere of courtly love back to life in one of Italy's most beautiful villages.

Saint Valentine's Day within the Fortress Walls

Every year, around Valentine's Day, the village of Gradara (Province of Pesaro and Urbino, Marche) dons its romantic attire and becomes Gradara d'Amare. The cobblestone streets of the historic center, the walls, and the famous Malatestiana Fortress transform into a romantic setting where history, legend, and enchantment intertwine. It's one of the most anticipated winter events in the Marche region and a must-visit for couples seeking something more poetic than a restaurant dinner.

The Legend of Paolo and Francesca

Gradara is no ordinary village when it comes to tales of love: according to tradition, it was within these very walls that the tragic passion between Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Polenta unfolded, immortalized by Dante in the 5th Canto of the Inferno in the Divine Comedy. "Amor, ch'a nullo amato amar perdona" (Love, which exempts no beloved from loving): the verses of the Supreme Poet still echo in the village alleys today, and the entire event revolves around this timeless story of forbidden love, intrigue, and secrets that have marked the history of the Castle.

What to Experience During the Event

During the Valentine's Day weekend, the village offers a rich program of experiences designed for couples and families:

  • Themed guided tours of the Fortress retracing the steps of Paolo and Francesca;
  • Immersive theatrical narrations of the 5th Canto of the Divine Comedy in the village's small theatre;
  • Fire-eater shows by the Malatestiana Court animating the streets in the evening hours;
  • Candlelit illumination of the historic center, creating a timeless atmosphere in the evening;
  • Food and wine walks with tastings of local products, including the famous Cherry Wine.

There are also small romantic rituals that have become symbols of the event: the registry of lovers to leave their names, the Love Selfie in historical settings, and the Wishing Well to make a wish for two.

A Fairytale Village

Part of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy' circuit, Gradara is one of the best-preserved medieval castles on the peninsula. Visiting it during Gradara d'Amare means experiencing the charm of the Fortress, the ramparts, and the Malatestiana Court in an intimate and festive setting, where the courtly love of the Middle Ages takes center stage once again. The event is organized by Pro Loco Gradara in collaboration with the Municipality of Gradara, and it represents one of the signature events of the village's winter calendar.

Gradara d'Amare โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Gradara d'Amare took place on Saturday, February 14th, and Sunday, February 15th, with the theme of love and its sweetness. Two days of guided tours of the Fortress on the trail of Paolo and Francesca, narrations of the 5th Canto of the Divine Comedy, fire-eater shows, and the village lit only by candlelight in the evening hours.

For Valentine's Day 2026, the village of Gradara offered a program identical on both Saturday, February 14th, and Sunday, February 15th, dedicated to love and sweetness.
