The procession of the Dead Christ in the city's baroque heart
The Good Friday Procession is one of the oldest and most defining religious events in Acireale, a baroque city in the province of Catania overlooking the Cyclops Riviera. Its origins date back to the early 17th century, when the first penitential processions of Holy Week took shape. The route and structure of the rite were codified in 1656 by the Jesuit father Luigi La Nuza, who set up the famous Calvary at the church of the Most Holy Savior.
The heart of the procession is the venerated effigy of the Dead Christ, a papier-mâché work from 1723 attributed to an anonymous author and donated by Pietro Paolo Valerio, a member of the Archconfraternity of the Most Holy Crucifix in San Pietro. The figure of the deposed Christ, of intense expressiveness, is accompanied in the procession by the statues of Our Lady of Sorrows, Saint Veronica, and Saint John the Evangelist. The effigy is kept and carried by the confraternity, which has overseen its devotion with ecclesiastical approval since the early 18th century.
The procession winds through the late-baroque historic center of Acireale, a recognized heritage site of eastern Sicily: from the starting church, the procession reaches Piazza Indirizzo, Corso Umberto, and Piazza Duomo, unfolding between the carved facades of churches and noble palaces. The parade is marked by funeral marches, torches, and the devotion of the faithful crowding the streets. At the end, in Piazza Duomo, the bishop leads the concluding meditation before the effigy.
The Good Friday procession of the Dead Christ is the culmination of a broader tradition that, in Acireale, also includes the procession of the Christ at the Column in the preceding days. Together with the other Holy Week celebrations—from Palm Sunday to the Easter Vigil in the Cathedral—these rites make the city one of the most significant centers of Sicilian popular piety, where faith, baroque art, and community identity have been intertwined for centuries.
The Dead Christ procession of Good Friday 2026 in Acireale was held on Friday, April 3, starting at 8:30 PM from the church of Santa Maria dell'Indirizzo, in Piazza Salvo D'Acquisto. Due to ongoing work at the Most Holy Savior, the Calvary was again set up at the church of the Indirizzo. The procession, organized by the Archconfraternity of the Most Holy Crucifix in San Pietro, traveled through Piazza Indirizzo, Corso Umberto, Piazza Duomo, Via Davì, Via Meli, Piazza Leonardo Vigo, and Via Ruggero Settimo, concluding in Piazza Duomo with the final meditation by Bishop Antonino Raspanti.
Route: Piazza Salvo D'Acquisto, Piazza Indirizzo, Corso Umberto, Piazza Duomo, Via Davì, Via Meli, Piazza Leonardo Vigo, Via Ruggero Settimo, with conclusion in Piazza Duomo.
The liturgical animation was provided by the "Maria SS.ma Annunziata" Cathedral parish and the "Notre Dame de Lourdes" polyphonic choir of the "San Giuseppe" parish.
The effigy was exposed for the veneration of the faithful in the Chapel of Jesus and Mary at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. At 9:00 PM, Easter Vigil in the Cathedral.
