About Giubiana of Cantù

On the last Thursday of January, in Cantù, one of the most evocative traditions of Brianza takes place: the Giubiana. A historical procession in costume starts from Parco Martiri delle Foibe and reaches Piazza Garibaldi, where a large bonfire burns the effigy of the old Giubiana, symbolizing the farewell of winter. Amidst dancing fountains, fire shows, risotto with luganega sausage, and mulled wine served by the Alpini, the festival combines a propitiatory rite, folklore, and conviviality in the province of Como.

An ancient rite in the heart of Brianza

The Giubiana is a tradition widespread throughout northern Lombardy, and in Cantù, in the province of Como, it is celebrated on the last Thursday of January with great participation. The Giubiana is the effigy of an old woman who is put on trial and then set on fire: a propitiatory rite symbolizing the end of winter and the hope for a good harvest.

The procession and the bonfire

The evening begins with a historical procession in costume that starts from Parco Martiri delle Foibe and crosses the town center to Piazza Garibaldi. Here, after the reading of the sentence and a theatrical re-enactment of the Giubiana legend, the effigy is burned in a large bonfire. The square is illuminated by dancing fountains and fire shows, in a highly evocative atmosphere.

Taste and community

The convivial aspect is not forgotten: the Alpini distribute risotto with luganega sausage and mulled wine with a free offering, while stalls offer sweets, fritters, and local specialties. It is a community festival that draws families and curious visitors from all over the Como Brianza region to the town center.

Organized by the Pro Loco

The event is organized by the Pro Loco Per Cantù together with the Municipality of Cantù. In the preceding days, the Giubiana effigy is displayed in the shop windows of Villa Calvi, building anticipation for the evening of the bonfire.
